I have a MC8 whose baggage bay doors on the curb-side all need to have the cable/counter balance system replaced. Some of the cables are broken. What do I need to do to repair the counterbalance? Do I need to pull up the floor to get to the cables or what? This little job looks like it may be a major job. Anybody done this? How do I do it.

Assuming that the MC8 is the same as the MC9 and I believe that it is, the counterbalance as you put it is a strong spring connecting the two cables connected to each side of the bay door. These cables are then run via pulleys into a channel up in the top of the bay. You can access this spring just by getting in the bay and looking up into the channel. If the bay door wont stay up you will need to replace the spring for that particular door. Just prop the door up to keep the weight off the spring and disconnect it. (Be careful that the door is propped up good as you don't want it falling down or on you. Thanks. DrEd

Thanks for the input DrEd, but the one door that won't stay up has its cable broken, how do I get into the channel to remove and replace the cable/spring? The other two doors are VERY hard to lift and I figure they need their adjustment adjusted. Some of this looks straight forward, but some seems to entale getting into the channel, this was really the intent of my question. My fingers are not long enough, thin enough or have enough joints to get in there not counting my eyes can't see in there (eyes on stalks would be SO HANDY.) Any other ideas would be welcome. Dale

I just changed the spring on one of my MC9 doors. It's actually quite easy. Prop the door up solidly, unscrew the cover in the middle of the channel, and remove the broken spring through the opening. Take the hook and attach it to the new spring, pull the other cable and hook and attach, and up you go. The spring is available through MCI parts. It took my son and I about a half hour to change. Not nearly as difficult as I'd feared.

OK, I see the confusion. There is no unscrewable cover in the middle of the channel on my bus. It looks kinda like a "V" and is welded in place. Do I have a weird channel or did they change after mine was made (1977)?
