Hi All. I have a 7.5 Onan, air cooled, in my 04 and it has the stock exhaust. There is one muffler about 6-7" x about a foot on thp of the genny, ahen it goes down into a small, ithing spark arrestor. I think it's 1 1/4" pipe. I want to quiet it and do an up-pipe to get the exhaust above the roof. I was at a motorcycle shop the other day and it occured to me that some of those mufflers might be excellent for a genny. Most crotch-rockets have way more HP and are super quiet in their stock config. One could easily use one in the front of the genny compartment, but could also put one of those really nice chrome mufflers on the top of the up-pipe to eliminate any of the resonance the logn pipe might create.
Anyone ever used bike pipes? When these shops do an upgrade, they often just toss the stock pipes so they are often free and lusually about the right diameter. I saw one with a built in catalytic converter, but I am thinking my old Onan with a carb would kill it fast.
Also, any good ideas on how to attach a removable up pipe?
Thanks,
Jim

The up-pipe will kill most of the exhaust noise, probably no muffler will be needed.
try a long piece of pipe or tubing or even a vacuum cleaner hose to see the effect before you go to a lot of trouble constructing something.
A significant amount of noise is killed by the water jackets on a water cooled motor, not much you can do with an air cooled motor other than putting it in a sound box, some make quite a racket.
The air intake can also make a bit of a roar on some motors, a big air cleaner often takes care of that.

Eaves trough down spout seems to me to be one of the good choices for inexpensive up-pipe and has ready made elbows too!

Use the same colour as a house with kids, they are always crushing the spouts, then it may be re-assigned to downspout duty if you change your mind.

happy coaching!

I have planned chrome stacks up the back of my bus (old truckers never die...) and I am plumbing my gen exhaust right into the same stacks. Everything should be "up,up and away" with no DD smoke on my toad.Of course I realize this would not be everyones "cup of tea", but I think it's gonna be way cool!

Buswarrier - good idea - would look nice and pretty cheap to boot! I like it.

John, I would love to do that on my bus too - maybe down the road I'll see how yours comes out. How do you plan on getting around the hatch door? On my 04, it would need to be cut and modified to allow just a part of it to open, or out the side by the radiator at the rear.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, mine are planned up just inside of the taillights which is fairly open in my MC5, I have the 2 5" stacks already, I just have to get some elbows to bring them in through the body and some 5" flex to run from the muffler (left side) across between the motor and rear bumber to make the right stack operable. When and if I ever get to that point, I will put up some pictures.

John,
Sounds nice! I'd love to see how it comes out. I think it would make the following drivers more tolerant of the old bus smells if it were high! Good luck,

At FMCA conventions, the RV's have to have this up pipe in place when parked together. They usually slip over the horizontal pipe coming out from under the coach after chrome turn down is removed if you have one. They have some form of easily disconnected attachment at the coach drip rail to support the upper end. When ready to leave, remove and reinstall turn down. Some of the exhaust pipe bending shops now have stainless steel pipe in some of the popular sizes. You could take your coach there and have it bent to size. If you are really ambitious, you could polish the stainless to a mirror finish. You could even put the curved exhaust tip on top and direct it to deflect any remaining noise. You could even have 5 inch pipe made to fit to impress the big boys. Tell them it is a 100 kw generator. :-)

I personally like duals with no mufflers and also a jake brake. WOW thats impessive, Loud too especially coming into a town and it is at the bottom of the hill on a saturday night. It will rattle the windows and people will look and run when necessary.LOL Had driven a flex with this set-up and boy did we get the looks. I still laugh about it.

On noise, I was in line at Home Depot the other day and a guy had a couple 4x8 sheets of a sound absorbing material. It was about 1/2" thick and looked al lot like ceiling tile material - a light weight fiberous looking stuff. Anyone ever use it around the genny compartment? I'd never seen the stuff myself.

might be Celotex or Homasote or a dark brown version of the same. Some use a foil backed thin glass insulation. There are also thin lead sheets available to do this. Several options. There is a foam with a heavy mastic or asphalt surface on one side that is available to use in cars for under the carpeting.

Dump the bus camper and just get a HARLEY and a pickup truck to tow it to where you want to ANNOY folks for your "fun".

Do not be amazed if they use you and your racket as targets,, teaching their kids to shoot at trash.

With so many wanting to add further restrictions to our hobby, why try to antagonize with loudness?

Many places prohibit parking RVs at home. I'm sure the free overnight parking will dry up fast if loud generators are used. . . .

Also, one should understand that when it comes to playing games, not everyone plays by the same rules. & some may have less to loose than you think . . .

I think everyone needs to back it down a notch. I am putting stacks on my bus, but always figured they would be after the muffler. Gomer is screwing around and FF just wants to pick a fight with someone. As far as shooting as someone

"Do not be amazed if they use you and your racket as targets, teaching their kids to shoot at trash."

That kind of irresponsible flaming is exactly what is causing incidents like we saw yesterday at the Holocaust museum and doesn't have any business on this board in my never to be humble opinion.

Hey guys I agree but if you continue to absorb Freedy's sarcastic comments without calling him on it then he will continue to dish it out! What gives him the right to belittle everyone for every thing they do just because they didn't do it the way HE thinks it should? There hasn't been one positive from this guy about anything unless it was something asked by him personally such as for his "sportscar" or his newest hunk!
Like I said, keep accepting his comments and words of sarcasm, learn to live with it! Speak up and shut him up!

BLAM BLAM...... if one loves that noise, pipe it into the coach near the driver's seat. If Harley riders love the noise, why are the pipes pointed away from the rider. Personally, I don't care as long as it doesn't annoy ME.

Yea I thought a quiet bike was the way to go too until I went for a ride and couldn't hear the motor for the wind! Another theory is, louder the pipes, the more blue hairs can hear and that saves lives!
And John have you ever rode a Harley or ANY bike for that matter? If you notice some of the newer custom bikes have the pipes even shorter than usual. They stop about where the riders feet are although pointing downward to keep most of the heat away from the rider. If it wasn't for the heat, I'm sure you would find some crazy riders with the exhaust pointing at them!

Now to buses. It has been known that straight pipes actually add HP. The free'r flowing the exhaust the more HP the engine will produce and we all know these heavy buses need that ESPECIALLY with the older 6 and 8V's.

My bus has a whole NEW exhaust system and to be frankly honest it sounds like an upgraded sewing machine while driving it. I would rather hear the motor running instead of relying on the tach all the time. It sounded better and RAN better when the muffler had a hole in it.

I agree a LOT of noise is not needed is specific areas/places like camp grounds but it sure isn't hurting a thing going down the road and if your one of those that lives right ON the road, deal with it or simply move which might be a good thing since people like Freedy will teach their kids to shoot at you!

Before you know it the code enforcement will be out with a decibel meter checking exhaust or better yet, Sean might start quoting the code book if there is one regarding noise levels and we sure don't want that do we? :-)

Gomer, been through Butler and some of the other small PA towns many times and the houses are right up by the street and those coal buckets go through there and blow windows out of the houses, no doubt in my mind. I just don't think it required a threat to "shoot someone" over the noise of their vehicle. I have driven lots of trucks with straight stacks and frankly they get a little annoying if they are right up behind the cab. I wouldn't want the racket on my bus. Low and slow is gonna be my watchword when we get in that old gal.

Fast Fred!! Ace never brought childist HATE/RAGE in again> He was stating just what we all do when a thread appears, and I value all the comments even if they can and do get interesting at times.
Let us ALL remember that we are an indivual and we have our opinions, So let us not judge anyone's opinion just because it is not in aggreance with ours. I am not one to argue with some people because even tho I am 65 I still want to learn and share my thoughts while I am able to and be what God wants us to do "Love your neighbor as yourself"
Nothing meant to anyone here in a bad way, just stating how I feel.

The police are out with the decibel meters all over and they do pick-on/target bikes and trucks. Everywhere we go we see the Jake restriction signs. Our 4-71 had a empty muffler and she would ROAR going at full throttle.I love bikes but the straight pipes on some are gonna ruin it for all. And if you have loud pipes use your head/foot! Besides a loud drone will wear you out on a all day trip.

""I love bikes but the straight pipes on some are gonna ruin it for all.

DAMN RIGHT!!

Just as in bus conversions BIKEs are a personal choice.

Most of the HOG folks I see are using the bike as jewelry to make a personal statement about them selves. No mufflers ,weekend tatoos , and riding in a pack, with the obligatory pick up to bring a couple to the shop .

"FUN" seems to be heard 3 miles away .

On the other side are the "Crotch Rockets " bikes that will go to 100mph and stop , before a HOG gets much above 40.

Different folks , different view of the same hobby, just like bus campers.

ME ? 1964 BMW R-60-US Big seat , big tank.

Almost silent , 125,000 miles with out surgery but hardly fast ..

My take at bikes is transportation,
neither an ego builder or adrenilin booster.

Yeah, me too. The "swingarm" front suspension BMW's were about the finest bikes ever built (right, Gary?)

I definitely wouldn't go that far. My R75 had telescopic forks but drum front brakes like the old swing arm. While I did enjoy that bike I did move up to a K100 RS which even had antilock. Had many others as well but the K100 is still me favorite
