Is there a FAQ on how to identify what kind of diesel engine a bus has? I've looked (and maybe not hard enough), but I can't find anything. I'd like to be able to tell what kind of engine this Mack is running.

thanks,
Dan

FAQ= Frequently Asked Questions Determining the engine type is an antique Mack bus is not a FAQ. You are going to have to go out and look at it and see if you can figure it out. The original may have also been replaced by a different engine in years past. This is just one of the problems you are going to face with an unusual and vintage bus.

I know determining an engine type wouldn't be A FAQ, but I'd think that it would certainly be a subject that would be IN a FAQ. I'd imagine that one of the first things a prospective buyer of ANY bus would want to be able to determine is what kind of engine it has in it.

Whether this one has the original or not would be good to know. Being able to identify what it's got woudl go a long way towards making a decision on whether to purchase or not.

Dan,

Might want to purchase this book from Amazon.com:

Mack Buses: 1900 Through 1960: Photo Archive
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1583880208/

I've not read it, but it might give you some ideas.

If your bus still has the data plate it may have the engine number of the original engine. Then you can see if you can find the number on the current engine and see if they match. Do you know the year and model of this Mack bus?

I recently asked a similar question and the answer was interesting... see the thread Engine Question for a beginner.
