My trany fluid looks more like motor oil than Transmission fluid. Dose not smell burnt. My first thought is to change it. But in the past I have had two older cars that the fluid had probably never been changed and was no longer good. The first car I changed the fluid and the second I had a Transmission shop do it both Transmission started to slip bad and needed rebuilding. I guess the old fluid had turned to lacquer and coated the plates and such. Than the new fluid acted as a cleaner and that was the end of there life. So my questions are, is there a way to tell if it is bad? Do bus companies ever use a fluid in the transmissions that is not ATF? She drives great if I leave it alone it will probably last a long time.. It is an Allison 5 speed

Allison recomend either

Dextron III

or

C4 FLUID ???? for severe duty / off road duty
C4 FLUID ???? for air temps above 95 degrees

Motor oil is acceptable.

It was more popular some years ago. Its cheaper to change and would probably be my choice if I didn't already have ATF.

I think it rules out a lot of problems because some of the new ATF eats gaskets if mixed, and its real hard to always get the same spec ATF without going to Transynd.

I think you are lucky if you already have motor oil in service in your Allison.

Called

Valley Detroit Diesel Allison
11300 Inland Avenue, Mira Loma California

Phone: (951)681-9283

THEY SAID - A lot of HT740/741 or VT 730/731
used MOTOR OIL - IF it's in there DO SWITCH - stay with the motor oil - they even said it worked better in many cases

If you have Dextron III (RED) don't mix the two

Pete

Sorry for the confusion

pete that post of yours has a typo or two i think iand was a little confusing

i called teh same shop you refferenced here and asked em a bunch a questions cause im dealing with a fluid change myself

the guy said DONT SWITCH IF EVERYTHINGS WORKING GREAT he said "if it aint broke dont fix it."

he also explained that unless you do a "evacuation" and get out ALL the previous fluid you definetly SHOULD NOT switch using whatever you have

if it previously had motor oil, use that. if it previously had ATF, use that.

you can easily tell the difference when draining it. take a light under there with you and if the fluid pouring out is red and translucent then thats ATF. if its black and NON-translucent its motor oil

HTH FWITW - the people at that shop were really cool and the guy didnt mind answering questions at all and even said call back to chat if i want, thats my kinda shop!
