Just became the owner of a 1960 4104. It has some issues. The onan 6.5 rv genset was in the process of being updated but never finished. It has been modified with wiring diagram 611-1157. Does anyone have that diagram? Thanks. |

Bill, your link is garbled. I tried to separate them but couldn't get them to work. Is there another? Thanks. |

Harry: Welcome. I emailed you an Onan RV generator troubleshooting guide that I had in my records. I found it useful. |

I'm having problems keeping my gen running. It's also a 6.5 as soon as I let go of the start button it dies. Checked the oil and turned off the breakers. What elses?????? |

Anthony - That problem is not uncommon. But there are multiple causes for it. It does depend on the age of your particular 6.5 and the circuitry in it, but for many... When the start button is held in, some of the control circuits are bypassed until the button is released. Once the button is released, if the oil level is low (or the oil sensor failed)the unit will shut down. Also, if the generator is running but not outputting AC power, it will shut down. In some scenarios, power is only sent to the fuel pump while the button is held, leading to fuel starvation when the button is released. Lastly, failure of the main circuit board are pretty common and can result in the symptom you are experiencing. ... and that's not a complete list. |

So I should pull my motherboard and take to onan for a check how hard is that to do from the front it appears i just need to pull 4 screws but whats under that? I'm not sure how old the gen is as that i got it off a wrecked phone company truck with a boom. It should't be no more then 10yrs but could be wrong. It sucks being at the racetrack with no a/c everything else works on 12volt or lp. |

If yours is similar to mine, access to the main control board is not difficult. As you said, 4 screws (torx 25 if I recall). If yours has the start/stop rocker switch mounted on the board, be aware that these sometimes fail and could be another source of your problem. On mine, I once discovered that the rectifier on this board had failed. The rectifier is the postage stamp sized chip that looks like one corner is trimmed off. It plugs into a socket. It is easy to test this by removing it and using an ohm meter on different leads. I ordered a heavier duty rectifier from an on-line source and popped it in. When I fired up the generator, I was thrilled that I was able to isolate the problem and fix it for $9 (that included shipping). But then there was the year I had to replace the whole control board.... that wasn't cheap. |
