Hi all,
I have a few areas of peeling paint where I think the previous owner did not properly prep the surface.

What is the best (Proper) primer to use on bare polished stainless?

Do I need to etch the surface first?

Thanks for the help,

Jock Fugitt

I have used a self-etching primer from DuPont with great success on the nose of the bus. Although I can see rock chips, they didn't go through to the stainless.

Painting stainless is similar to doing aluminum, e.g. Scub it thoroughly (steam clean if available) phosphoric acid etch, chromic acid conversion coat, epoxy or polyurethane primer then the finish color coats. Whew! Seems like a lot to go thru, but your current problem was pecipitated by some miscreant cutting corners. BTW I heard a rumor that "Uncle" is going to outlaw phosphoric acid sales to the general public. Any input guys? Cheers...JJ

I used Vinyl-wash primer from PPG on my RTS. Its on the bus for 7 years.
