Hi Guys,
Can I charge the 8D,s (24 volt) starting batteries with a 12 volt charger. I haven't been able to locate a 24 volt charger here locally.

Thanks
Bobbo

Yes -

Just disconnect the batteries, and charge each one separately.

Be sure to check the water level, and use a hydrometer to also check the specific gravity, both before and after charging. Easy way to find if you've got a dead cell. Available from most auto parts houses. . .

Yes, no problem.
I leave all cables attached and charge those big 12v batteries one at a time, or if I have two battery chargers around I do them both at the same time.
I am sure I will get some disagreement but have been doing it that way on boats and trucks for over 30 years (and now my bus too) and never had a problem.

Peter, I for one agree with you. There is no need to disconnect anything, AS LONG AS YOU ARE CAREFUL. There is no problem using two 12 volt chargers at the same time on two batteries connected in series for 24 volts. They do not even have to be identical chargers.

Just remember that at the junction of the two batteries, you will have the positive of one charger and the negative of the second charger connected to the same point electrically.

Thanks Guys,
I going to borrow my dad's 12 volt battery charger and charge the batteries. But I think I'm going to charge one battery at a time. RJ, I'm going to napa auto parts to pick up a hydrometer (I hope they have one) and perform the procedure you stated above. Batteries tend to scare me. Thanks again.

FF,
Sears had 24v chargers on closeout a month or so ago for about $50.00 each I bought two as a "good deal".
Rec'd them both. Really nice unit. PROBLEM is neither of the worked!!! Maybe part of the reason they were on closeout. Too many returns. I think they probably sold me the bad return units. FWIW, Joe
