i have a solenoid. i am using 110v house wire for the main lugs. which wire do i put on the lugs? the black/hot or the white/nutrual

Not sure if I totally understand what you are asking, but when you are switching an electrical line, it is generally considered better practice to break the "hot" line before the load.

Always switch the black wire. You may want to consider hiring someone for your electrical work, or at least for consulting on it.
