I have a friend with a couple of seated coaches that is considering repowering one of them with a C-12 I have for sale.

Both of his current engines are 8Vs, one a 71, one a 92

Anyone have input on what is involved?

Thanks

I don't know anything about the swap, but I had a c-12 in a quad-axle dump truck set at about 450 hp and it was one of the best most fuel efficient motors I have run.

They are too long and tall most guys extend the rear and that doesn't look good to me.But time and cash it can be done. good luck

One row of six instead of two rows of four, = a lot longer, change the exhaust, fresh air, water in and out, and NO aux drives on the back end of a pussy, so everything would have to be belted off the crank pulley.

About 4-5 years ago I was given a tour of a NEW MCI with a CAT, the driver started it from the rear and it was louder than any DD 2 cycle, and tighter than a MCI-5 with a 8-71,no room in engine comartment. For certain you need a bus oil pan and oil pickup, ground clerance. But there is/was a MCI-8 or 9 near Eau Claire WI. that had a big cam Cummins, and it was not extended also it was a stick shift.

The other big issue is the gearing. Four strokes want to run about 30% slower. It would make no sense to go to all the trouble to run a four stroke at 2100 RPM.

Brian Diehl did an engine conversion to an ISM in an MCI (http://home.earthlink.net/~diehls0792_1/BusSection10.html). That is a smaller engine that will fit with minimal structural change.

Does not help sell your engine, sorry.

Jim

I read the ISM into MCI a while back.

The local guy with the four coaches (2 Eagles, 2 MCI 1-8, 1-9) is a friend also, so I was hoping for a win/win deal.

Thanks everyone for your input.

David
Greyhound here in western Canada has converted some 102A3's with the Cat C10 and also the Cat 3176B mated to a 7 speed manual. Top gear likely overdrive, but not certain.

Joe.

Thanks Joe, that is interesting to hear. In my mind, I think the C-12 as of the replacement to the 3176, but could be slightly larger...not sure. I think the Cat C-12 is 49" long from flywheel housing to front pulley.
It would be interesting to find out what modifications were done to the 102A3s so that the 3176/7 speed would fit...and what (if any) rear end gearing changes were made...anyone?

I might consider a 102A/C3 if I thought the C-12 was a candidate for repower.

Dave,
will check with my friends at greyhound here up north..
but I think they had a rad on one side and
the charge air cooler on the other
btw...my 94 d3 has the cat 3176/7speed and is still my favorite to drive...and it has a 3:73
I'd love to put this in a mc7 or 8
let me know if you do it
