I am in the process of buying a 4104 that has been converted and updated with new caps and paint. This bus has 8 speeds, the owner says and I believe, does this mean the rear end is split as it has a knob on the stick, I don't believe the transmission is an 8 speed? Is this a good thing, like in the mountains? It also has the 671 DD that smokes when first started but quits after it get warm, will most likely need a rebuild sometime soon. MJ |

It's a hydroshift transmission with a low and high range in each gear. The hydroshift transmission was a option on the PD-4104,s The transmissions are a fine unit when working properly. But if it has problems parts are very hard to find most bus owners will replace it with a 4 speed spicer transmission. JLV |

The idea of more gears in an under powered bus is a great idea being able to stay in a better torque range. We bought a service manual for one several years ago, after looking it over closely, decided to many other things to go wrong. All of J.L.statements are right on in my opinion. |

Michael - John's right on the money when it comes to that transmission: "But if it has problems parts are very hard to find". I've heard recently that clutch discs are no longer available, and hard to find a rebuilder that will work on old ones. Since you're in Alviso and I'm in Fresno, email me privately and I'll share my phone number with you so we can talk about this in greater detail. Just click on my name above this post, and it will open a preaddressed message box. RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Mike I do not know a lot about that transmission but if the clutch is the same as on the 04/spicer i dont have problems getting someone to work on them or getting parts. John Rigby |

In my previous post I mispelled the name it,s correct name is Hydrashift. The clutch is different than the standard clutch for the PD-4104. The Hydrashift clutch is a wet clutch were the standard transmission PD-4104 clutch is a dry clutch. I failed to say that the Hydrashift has a direct drive and a overdrive for each gear so it is a true 8 speed transmission for a PD-4104. R.J.Long is correct parts are very hard to find and might not even be avaliable. The standard 4 speed Spicer transmission or a 6/V92-V730 power pack transplant is in order if the Hydrashift fails. Thanks all The clutch was replaced 40,000 miles ago along with the alternator. The owner said he has no trouble with the Hydrashift and really likes it. I think it will be good thing. Mj |

If memory serves me, the Hydrashift was a planetary gearset mounted in the bellhousing with the clutch, so a different clutch was used. The transmission was the standard Spicer 4 speed. The planetary gearset allowed two different gear selections for each gear, hence the "eight speed" label. They proved to be fragile in commercial service, but would probably be just fine in private use. Garry Dean at Dean's Coach (919)383-4740 can help with service manual and probably parts. Jim Stacy |

Jim The way I remember it you are correct, it also has a pump in the regular transmission housing. I talked to Bernie Bernhart about one he had for sale 4 or 5 years ago. He might even still have it. Craig |
