That old chip in the curbside windshield finally changed to a crack, so it's time for a new one. So where can a guy get a replacement for a 5A on the west coast. Any help appreciated. Tom |

you should be able to get a pair direct from MCI. yes all ways change both of them at the same time as the shading will be different than the one you still have in,aside from having a spare the cost of shipping is just about the same as for a single windshield.. Tom contact South OR, diesel , they are at Roseberg and do a lot of bus work and they may have them in stock. 1 800 755 7634 or direct 503 672 7400 the area code may have changed to 549. |

Not much you can do once a chip has spread into a large crack. But, for the future, you can prevent this by repairing the chip, volcano, or small crack immediately after it occurs. Our windshields run about $3,000 installed, and we learned the hard way really quickly how important speed is in getting these filled. That's why, even though most glass shops charge only around $50 to fill a chip (and many insurance companies will cover this), we learned to do it ourselves with a $10 kit available at any Wal-Mart. Details on the kit and process our on our blog, in this post (scroll down a bit to get to the windshield part): http://ourodyssey.blogspot.com/2007/09/arkansas-2-odyssey-0.html We have not had to replace another windshield since we started carrying these kits; we always have two on board. It's often the case that we will get a chip either far away from civilization and a glass shop, or at a time when the glass shops are closed, and this lets us fix it right on the spot, before it can spread from road stress or any other reason. Thanks all, I'll begin tomorrow checking with Southern Oregon Diesel and MCI. One more question, regarding MCI.... How do you order anything from them? Their membership area wants fleet related info to access. Is there a trick I'm missing to get in? Sean, excellent advise, money well spent. Tom |

Tom, I just ordered some parts from MCI, and as is typical around here, I can't locate the 800 number right now. You want to contact Carlos (order desk) at MCI Service Parts, Inc., 7001 Universal Coach Drive, Louisville, KY 40258. Bus first, two tricks to make it work: 1. Tell Carlos or whomever you want to set up an account to order parts. You don't need a business name. I just use my name and address. You don't want a 30 day account (more scrutiny and paperwork)just pay each order by credit card. NOTE: They won't sell you anything unless you have an account. 2. When you order, they want to hear MCI part numbers from the MCI parts manual for your bus. They don't want to spend the time to translate the make, model, year, and serial number of your bus to the desired product. MCI may or may not have copies of manuals for your bus available. But they are out there for sale on the Internet. Contrary to popular opinion, I have found their new product prices to be competitive to other sources selling takeoffs that literally can be worse than the part being replaced. I've been in that trench and kept the junk to remind me. |
