I'm looking for a cheap scale, like a fish scale that will go up to say 1500lb that's pretty small and can take and hold a maximum reading to satisfy a curiousity I have. I figue with all the various backgrounds here someone can help me. |

Do you remember the old farm scales that were used to weigh hanging beef? Antique stores in your area may have some. Feel free to call me, chech my profile. |

How accurate do you want to get? You can 'okie' a scale with a bathroom scale and board or lever of some sort. Basically it is just math. |

I'm looking for something I can hook one end to a lead rope and the other end to a horse to see how much force they're pulling on me with. How big are the old beef scales? |

Old beef scales only hang and have weights that hang on with hooks and are moveable. Some old spring type will go to weigh 100lbs or more. They were not legal accurate. |

Is there any kind of an instrument (like a probe or thermocouple, etc) that could be installed on a lead rope and measure stretch on some type of handheld DVOM? Kinda HiTech for measuring the kinda horsepower you're talking about. |

One might also get a scale from some big game outfitter, remove the face, and affix some carbon paper to it, then gently bend the needle so that it scratches the carbon paper, as some primitive recorder. http://www.google.com/products?q=game+scale&oe=utf-8&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:unofficial&clien t=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wf I reckon you'll only get to measure how much force you can hold, and not what the horse can do. And you can find out the answer to that without a horse. There's also rigging simple machines with pulleys, to multiply force, but as you probably know, it's asking for trouble with all but the gentlest horses. |

...oh for the simple times when one horse equalled 1 hp, and one big horse = one 1 big horse power ? |
