When you say "won't start cold" how cold is it outside? Any diesel doesn't like to start in cold weather without some help. Most light duty diesels have a glow plug system to aid cold starting. Most medium duty and larger diesels use block heaters or an ether starting aid. I prefer using the block heater. It is easier on the engine and starter.

I had a simular problem on my 8v71 turned out to be a sticking fuel control lever shut off air piston -- it stuck a bit (didn't move ALL the way to on position) when cold. A clean out and new rubber piston works fine.

Your engine should start at that temp without any help. I had a truck with a 671 in it and it would start just fine down into the high 30's any colder and I would have to give it a snort of ether. Sounds like low compression. By the way does the starter spin it fast enough?

sounds like a tune-up might help some..... to have the injectors checked and reset to specs...you can have the injectors removed and "popped" to determine if they still have a good spray pattern....a mechanic could also pull the airbox covers on the side opposite the blower and check condition of the piston rings and also check condition of the cylinders.....good luck...jim

Bud
My 4104 with DD671 was similar to what you describe as "cold starts" so I began using the block heater all the time. However, I went through and cleaned all the battery and ground connections starting from the battery bay and worked back to the engine block. This increased the starting RPM significantly and now my definition of a cold start is below 40F.
