Were these ever used in a highway coach? My friend is looking for one (for a VERY OLD generator that some numb-nuts tried to start with the "if in doubt, use lots & lots of ether" method"), & is wondering where to look for, if nothing else, a core. The old one ran perfectly (until the ether stunt) with >35,000 hours on it, BTW. Holy cow, those 71's are tough engines. |

Hi Johnny, My guess would be that the 4V71 is too small for a coach unless it was a small coach and it was many years ago. It's probably in the 125-150 HP range. After accesories, not enought HP left to climb hills but just enough to pull away from a stop sign. FWIW, Craig S |

It's not a V--it's an inline 4-71. I expect "many years ago"--the generator is vintage somewhere around 1950. What WOULD have this engine? |

Yea, the 471 is like a 671 only it has less power as it only has 4 cylinders instead of 6. However, if the bus or coach weighed very little then it may work out ok, just only be a little slow. Jake Brakes are available plus they sound nearly the same only a little different. Good luck. |

If I remember my numbers correctly, they were used in the early Scenicruisers. Two of these 4 cylinder engines were used until they converted the buses to the 8v71's. Jim |

The 1960 MCI-1 used a DD 4-71 engine The 1961 MCI-2 (which I have) used the 6v71 The 1963 MCI-3 used the DD 6v71 The 1964 MCI-4 used DD 8v71 Most MCI-5'; 7's 8's and 9's used 8v71's The MCI-6 used a 16v71 (2-8v71's joined together) I just replaced the 6v71 in my coach, the fellow I bought it from is a Detroit mechanic and has various parts and engines on hand, he may have a 4-71 or know of one, if you're serious. Stan - The MC-6 did NOT use a 16V71. Originally they came with the 12V71, but the majority were replaced with 8V71TAs and Allison HT740s after the drivers kept tearing up the manual gearbox's clutch. RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Johnny, I have a 3-53 that may work for your friend, if he's not powering a small town. You can email me if interested. Don |

The 4-71 was used in many construction vehicles, rollers, packers pumps etc. almost any one who deals with Detroiters should have access to a 4-71 block etc. I agree with RJ, the "6" used a 12V71 originaly, then the turboed 8V71. Also many MC-5s had 6V71s as original equipment. Gus Haag |

try hassinger deisel Service in Middleburg PA........... Great Detroit mechanic...independent...does all the local bus company work, Capitol trailways , wolf's, Rohrer, and Capital Area transit. -71 specialist, 1-71 all the way up. also does a bunch of work for the marine guys around. 3 guys in whole shop...very small very accountable. I'd take my 6-71 there before any DD shop....... most of the techs at DD have never seen a 71 series just heard about them |

I saw one (4v71)at Coach Services Gary (owner) wanted to sell it. http://www.tcsn.net/coachservices/services.htm They have a lame web site, but they are good bus mechanics and wonderful people. Their garage is in the middle of nowhere in the coastal foothills of central California, east of Paso Robles. Coach Services (805) 238-4443 Will |
