Was kayaking in the narrows last week and got pretty scared. Then I saw this on you tube and am grateful we're all here to talk about it!You can hear and see the smoke when she starts to drink the oil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEfUblSDzww Roger |

Very interesting. So why did the tug capsize? Was it because it allowed the barge to get ahead of it in a turn??? |

In the ebb tide there are extremely large and strong whirlpools. They can be hundreds of feet across, with 10 foot "eyes". In the flood tide, the standing waves can be over 10' high. Tons of water through a narrow space. Awesome power! R |

Probably a 2 stroke vs. 4 stroke thing |

~noting how one of the twin jimmies just keeps combusting along as as it sucks the air out of the engine compartment, and the air in. (speculated by the normal speed screw after the capsize) while you hear the other screaming until the oil sump is sucking air. Pumping out air an water in would be the quick sinking effect once she is on her belly, I'm guessing. ... this preventable incident ( incident is preventable with prudence , accidents are not , as they say during insurance denials scams )almost makes we need to go see if the mouse trap has loosened up yet, did spray it down with penetrating oil on the last wake up , when it fail the emergency shut down test...APTBP ( always prepare to be prepared ) -Oh well, two more blocks for "don the jimmy souping-up guy" before the corrsion get the best of them... at least we can learn from this negligence and bus on safely. |

p.s. my guess is the run-way jimmy caused the uncontrolled turn and the capsize ... as well as the actual sinking/influx of water, -but it is hard to make a good guess based just on this video, as I wasn't really there. I was busy pulling wrenches on 4 bolts in the desert, on crap that was not "of bus kind" (insert green frowny face here) |

My guess would be the run-away jimmy only ocurred AFTER the tug flipped. I base that on the audio from this clip. While the tug is upright, and as it flips, I don't heard any unusual engine sounds. It is only a few seconds after it flips that you hear the engine start screaming. |

Look at where the guy is standing after the boat flips! Looks like it ran aground? |

Big 149 or small EMD? Probably not 71/92. May have been over run by the barge and the towline pulled it over. We had a tug rolled over by a barge when the wind pushed the barge into and over the tug on Hood Canal. Lost a crew member that time. Barges are big and tugs are small. |

I'll see your a wild speculation & raise you two educated guesses -just got the spuds washed out of my ears a month back or so, but the sound after the capsize is a 2 stroke outboard racing to the rescue, unlike the cowardly spectator with the shoe phone/camera. Look at the wake as the vessel "turns over the rope" and then watch the screw speed on the good jimmy that is evacuating the engine room as the water fills the void . BUSNUT disclaimer: ... I only look once , the quality was poor, and the dogs had not licked the sleep out of my eyes yet... |

I'll see your two educated guesses, and raise you a couple of relatively random reasonings... - The whole timing thing fits. As the tug disappears behind the barge, you start to hear the engine scream. About 5-10 seconds later, you see the smoke raising from behind the barge. The time delay is very much what I would expect for the smoke coming from a runaway jimmy to rise high enough to be seen over top of the barge. A couple seconds later, with the engine screaming and the smoke rising, the guy says "That's the engine". (Not "Here comes another boat to the rescue".) When the engine screaming sound ends abruptly, the camera pans the area and the only watercraft seen is the kayack (no outboard). It is not until at least 40 seconds later that the white boat comes into the area, and certainly no real engine sounds to point to. If there was some other craft in the area, out of camera view, I would have thought it would be in view of the water rescue taking place. |

Tug was on starboard side coming around the point and was next seen just as she was pulled under on the barge's port side. No doubt that was one of the tugs engines running away. Can you imagine being trapped inside with that going on!! And i know that water is cold even in the summer. Nice work on the crew to keep thier heads and escape the boat. Do you think those boys got any $ for the film? i would guess not. Atta-boys to dave for paddling out to help. |

I fold, was just trying to encourage you to post more WEC, so this way we both win -and so does the next busnut that remembers to test his mouse trap on the next round of PM , which leads him realize it needs some lubrication & exercise, thereby preventing a minor seal leak into a major engine throw away. ...Tanks for the virtual video detail card game anyhowssssssss, haven't play a hand in over 4 decades , so now I am good for another 40 and can get back to bus converting... |

My guess would be the tug lost power for what ever reason and the momentum of the barge caused it to overtake the tug and the tow cable pulled the tug sideways and over. If they could of released the tow cable they would not have capsized. Notice how just as the tug rolls the barge suddenly slows and turns toward the tug from the pull on the tow line. Don - that or they were traveling too fast for the turn and the tug was underpowered for the load and could not overcome the inertia - most tugs i've seen have a way to disconnect the cables in such an emergency - FWIW |

Interesting video Roger, It looks like the barg had to much speed and with the fast water it over ran the tug and pulled it over Dave L |
