Hey Guys: (SEE PREVIOUS THREAD "AIR LEAK/BRAKES)Thanks for all the good info on my last thread. The thread got so long, I thought my info would get lost in the shuffle, so I am starting a new one. I took the bus to the shop. They found that the passenger side can on the rear (drive) axle (not the bogey) is bad. This can has 3 air lines connected according to the mechanic. Called Norris again, and he said it is a 36/30 Can. He wanted $500+ for the thing. Called Greg Goodson @ Goodson Bus Sales. He wanted $213. Called TruckPro back. They have one in Memphis for $125. Can any of you tell me why I am getting such disparity in these pricings? I asked the guy at TruckPro twice to make sure this was a 36/30 and he verified it was. So you can obviously guess where I am going to buy.

Should I replace both of the rear ones while I am at it, and since it is already in the shop?? I obviously don't want to spend the money unless necessary, but I don't want to go through all this again in a short time. Is there anything else I need to have them look at that goes along with this. I have already told them to adjust all the brakes, etc.

Looking for the good advise as usual. By the way, it an '80 Eagle)

Buddy, there are others on the board that have far greater experience than I in these issues, but I have recently put in many hours on my back assisting and learning from a local college mechanic that does nothing but buses all day, every day.

Since I've had a 30/30 spring brake chamber and a DD3 in my hands recently, you don't have both on your bus. You have a pair of one type or the other. And as Jack Conrad and others have said, a spring brake chamber has 2 hoses attached. A DD3 has 3 hoses. They both are brake chambers for the drive wheels. And they both look basically the same. But they are totally different in how they accomplish the braking function .

Quite simply, someone is giving you bogus information. YOU need to go look at the brake chambers and count the number of air lines on them. It will be 2 lines or 3 lines. Don't let them confuse you with any other jaber whacky.

When you know for sure, let the experts here know. They will give you the best course of action, because in simple terms, the 3 hose brake chamber is more expensive to deal with than the 2 hose brake chamber.

Check it out yourself now while the wheels are off and let us know what you have under there. Take a flash light with you. Tell them you will get back to them.

Buddy,

I'm currently in need of two reman DD3 brake chambers. When you get time, could you post the contact names and phone numbers for Goodson and Truck Pro. Thanks.

You better find all the Bendix DD-3 stuff you can, I have heard Bendix is no longing making the chambers or the parts as of this last December. Which means the price will go up.

It sounds like some places are quoting you standard spring brake cans and the more expensive ones understand you have DD3's. DD3 are much more expensive than spring brakes

Buddy if your model 10 has the air cans mounted on the front side of the axle they will be spring brakes if on the back it will DD3 they had both just like a 05.You can change the Eagle DD-3 over to spring for less than a price of one DD-3 from Goodson then you can buy a pod at any truck stop for less than 40 bucks.
I conviced Paul to convert his 01 to springs and I am sure he would walk you through the proscess it is not that hard or costly to do

good luck

I talked with Buddy this afternoon, he is going to send me some pictures to make sure of what he has. Then we can determine which route to suggest to him.

I am grateful you talked me into it Clifford, best way to go in my opinion. I wish he lived closer so I could really help him out porperly. Not only is the complete changeover cheaper than even a rebuild kit for the DD-3, but the cans are available anywhere they sell truck parts. It also updates the brake system to a modern style.

You Eagle folks are fortunate. I looked at converting to 30/30s and they are same size except length -- 2" longer than a DD3. Doesn't sound like much but that 2" puts it right on the front bag walls.

By the sounds of it you must have an MCI? I have heard the same from a couple of friends of mine who own them. Is there not a way to change them over? Someone will have to come up with a design in order to do that, otherwise there will be a lot of MCI's just sitting when the supply runs out.

Spiders bolt to housings. You can reclock most spiders by unbolting them and turning them to the position you prefer, putting the larger spring brake can in a more favorable position.

Could I please have the contact info for truck pro and that 125 dollar 30/36.

The best I have ever been able to get one for is like 179 or 189.

Even if the one from truck pro is a "piggyback" that would still be a good deal. I wonder about shipping?

How about a phone #

Thanks

Just talked to MCI DD3 rebuilt cost $956.08 and if you have a good passable core you get $375.00 back so the rebuild cost is $581.08 they have New for $1500.00 Their supply is not from Bendix Its from Coach Guard! They will have then for a long time. US MCI guys I think would have a hard time to switch to spring breaks at least on the 5ers I see no other place to but a spring break and no room where the DD3 is at.
Bob I Went to

Rob, spring 30/30 or 30/36 cost around 50 bucks ea new you can pay more or less depending on the supplier. They come in 2 different strokes 2.5 and 3 inch and you will find different lengths in the cans I think it is M&M that makes the short one good luck

You can buy the parts to rebuild yours from Mohawk bus parts. Unless your cans are not reusable,9 you'll need to dissemble to check) the total for mine was a little over two hundred for all the parts. They aren't that difficult to rebuild. I replaced everything except housings, shaft/piston, springs, and a couple of other smaller parts. Once done, you can move on to other issues, as they shouldn't need service again for a long time. Even longer if you have an air drier.
