I currently have Progressive Insurance and they are charging me 2500 a year for a "non professionally converted bus" stated value. I havent been able to find anyone else who insures buses that are not professionally converted. The appraisals on this bus are 75,000 and 85,000 respectively. Any advice???

Can you give us some more information? Who is the actual insurance company (Progressive just represents tham as an agent), what state are you in, is it used for business, etc. The amount you pay sounds WAY too high for a conversion through Progressive. Mine is less than 1/10 of what you pay. Lots of factors enter into how a rate is calculated.

We have GMAC through the Good Sam club. I forget the cost but it is reasonable compared to others. Actually, I think it's $187 twice a year, come to think of it. We also have AAA with the RV coverage. More than paid for itself when we were towed.

I do not use for business. I called Progressive directly at 1-800-888-7764. I live in N.W. Indiana and our car insurance rates are very reasonable. I dont know why it is so high. They insisted this was the best they could do. I have the normal coverage however it does have replacement cost coverage with road side assistance. Every other place I called said they only provide liability and what their opinion of value is of a 1981 gmc bus if there should be a loss. Any help appreciated. I did call Good Sams and GMAC and they provide only liability according to them. I have not tried State Farm. I will

Try RVAA they use Royal and Sunalliance as well as Progressive. I have had R&SA through Miller for three years, Miller no longer represents R&SA however so I just switched to RVAA. Paying 1/3 of what you are for fulltime coverage in CA. With agreed on cash value of $125,000. They use ADP DATASOURCE for the appraisal. You can do the whole appraisal online with digital photos. RVAA also gave me credit for the previous years with Miller on the declining deductable. $500,000.00
liability policy. RVAA 1 800 521-2942

Robin,

Ditto to John's post.

Except I live in MI and pay less than 1/3. (700.00) on the nearly the same cash value.

Includes 100 deduct on damage to awning TV ant and towing coverage at no charge.

I made an error. Progressive is a primary insurer. RVAA is an agent. I prefer using an agent as they can shop around for you (within their insurance lines). Progressive is my car insurance carrier and they refused to insure a bus conversion in Missouri. I got my RV insurance through RVAA and they issued a Sun Alliance policy. The wait times on the phone are long but they do work with you to get a decent policy written. I recommend them. I only pay $183/yr for my MC9.

I went through RV Alliance. I thought I had progressive, but reviewing my paperwork the other day, I realized that I have Royal Sunalliance. Right now I have liability only at $208/Year. Once the bus is 80% finished, they will add the full coverage. Thier best guess on full coverage was $286/Year. I don't know how they arrived at that number because I did not give them a stated value amount. They must have it standardized based on make, model and year.

Also...Where you are makes a huge difference in insurance premiums. I'm in New Hampshire.

Check this out...I just bought a Honda 4x4 ATV. The insurance on that is $100/year more than the bus. Go figure....

I used to have GMAC. But when I moved from CA to OK and told them I was now full time in the bus, they said they could no longer insure me - not even for liability-only. What was weird is that if I was fulltime and moved to a new RV spot every week, then they could have insured me. Go figure. . . But since I only move the bus every few weeks and return to the same 'residence', they said no go.

So I went to a local agent who was able to get a Progressive policy for me. Cost twice as much as GMAC, but oh well.

Even my USAA automotive policy went up due to the move. Still can't figure out why insurance in rural OK costs more than to insure a vehicle on the overcrowded highways of CA. . . Not much logic in insurance, in my opinion.

Call GMAC again, because I have full coverage on my 4905 with them. My former agent (Progressive) said I had a "colorful" driving record, but even so my premium is $296.00 per half year. Talk directly to the people in the Underwriting Dep't. not the sales person that first answers the phone. They will want a written appraisal from a high-line RV dealer, (perhaps two) Good coverage and low deductible. Use RRR (now Good Sam) for the best roadside coverage. Includes your other autos as well now, so I may drop AAA. HTH Cheers...JJ

Thanks to all for the info. I have had a very "enlightening day" with Progressive. No one there could tell me (including the supervisor how the guy arrived at 2500 a year except to say I must have told him that I paid 80,000 for it. . which I didn't. Secondly they told me they could refigure it for half as much in Florida. My residence is in Indiana and I kept insisting they give me an Indiana quote which was 276. Now - I paid 599 less than 30 days ago for my first installment - they were willing to credit me (after much discussion and insisting on speaking with a supervisor) with all but 200 of it. They will not, however, apply the credit to the new policy. I have to pay again...Call their Progressive guy back and he says he made a mistake that the original policy indicated that I had said I wanted bus insured for 7,000. 7,000???? and they were charging me 2500??? Something is screwy with those people and I STILL CANT GET AN ANSWER AS TO WHAT THEY WILL PAY ME IF BUS IS A TOTAL LOSS. . OR HOW IT IS FIGURED. I have two professional appraisals which were done last year when bus was not painted and was 90% done. One 75,000 the other 85,000. They are in possession of both. Now they want nearly 500.00 for the insurance and I am not a full timer. I will call GMAC back and try the other suggestions but this is getting very frustrating. Can't believe a word any of these insurance people tell you and now I am out nearly $200.00 cuz the guy lied to me in the first place. UNBELIEVABLE...seriously considering reporting them to the insurance board!

We have full coverage on our 4905 through
State Farm for $384.00 per year.
Find a agent that is willing to work with you.
Good Luck.

It was funny when I insured my bus thru State Farm- they evidently have two divisions (internally) one for buses and one for RV's. They argued within themselves for a week trying to determine which department would get me. In defense of the insurance companies, my guess is that in relation to automobiles, there are so few conversions around that companies just don't know what to do with us in general, thus the confusion. A given agent probably does one bus per year if at all.... If busnuts owned 1,000,000 conversions in every state, I bet you wouldn't have any problem!!

Cheers

Robin, I live in Indiana and use farm bureau. All that is required is an annual membership for $25. My insurance runs about 520 annually, and that has 500k liability limits. Might be worth checking.

WHAT TO SAY OR NOT TO SAY -- I tried getting insurance with USAA. They, at first, had a very casual attitude, and I took the same talking about my experience in bus conversion. In the end they "would not insure for full coverage" (did get liability only though for my '63 - 4106). I'm probably well past the point in the conversion where I really need to find full coverage ($ & Time invested) and thought mentioning more specifically my training and experience in electrical, plumming, carpentry, mechanical...etc might? win them over (I'd rather keep ALL my vehicles insured with one company). Anyway, with them or some other company (like those mentioned above) I need to try again soon. Any suggestions of things they are looking for?

I had insurance with USAA but for coaches they were 3X as expensive as the competition , just for liability.

there great , but like old Ma Bell , when they go nut$ its best to dump them.
