I have Garrison steering on my 72 Provost, with a manual steering box. I'm told I should change to a power steering box and omit the Garrison system. Could I get your thoughts and ideas should I rebuild the Garrison system or upgrade. I have above average mechanical skills, with a fully equipped shop, but this is a little different and would like some advice and direction. Thanks, Fraser

...and if you want to practice on one before doing yours, I would gladly volunteer the Papabus. When could you come out to do it?

Regards.

As soon as you get rid of the mosquitoes. Good to hear from you Mark, Bob was over to see me. Had a good chat but I've been unable to hook up with him... We're in Cypress River Man,next August. We're to the Spokane rally next week and then to the Salmon Arm one the weekend after.. All the best, I'm using your umbrella, thanks

not sure about the garrison to full power switch, but I have heardf a few times that a well tuned power assist is just as pleasant as full assist Sheppard. If it ain't broke? Also manual box with assist is still drivable if there is a problem with the hydraulics.

That looks like a lash adjustment bolt on the side of the Garrison, have you kept it adjusted? There isn't much to rebuild those either, usually some bushings and gaskets.

If you don't like the way it drives and you are sure its the steering box change it. If you like the way it drives just repair your box. Lots of things affect drive ability. Is it low in the front? Is the toe close?
Raising my front really helped the way my Eagle drives out. Go for the high side on steer axle ride height and see if you like it.

Thanks Larry, I can put my hand on the steering wheel shaft at the steering box. The box is tight the slack is in the Garrison, the part with the hoses on it slides back and forth causing slack/play in the steering wheel. The comments I get are I should rebuild the unit as they work very well when tight, its 37 years old so may need the odd new gaskets. If it lasts another 37 years I'll be 98 years old and won't care. Has anyone have a rebuild diagram ?

Apparently it is an assist system. Personally, I'd go to the full power system and omit that unless it is very popular and parts are easy to obtain. Most power assist systems have more play than full power units, even when new. Changing later may be more difficult as parts get harder to obtain for older units.

Fraser,

I have had good luck working with Straight Line Steering in San Jose. They have a web site that is also helpful. straightline steering.com

You can use their trouble shooting information, it may help. It will at least give you some ideas that you can check before you rebuild the assist.

If shipping to Canada is an issue, they will probably tell you what parts kit you are looking for so you can get it up north.

I would think the set up you have is quality, being factory Prevost and that you would be happy with it when it is repaired.

Lucas makes a lube additive for worn Power Steering units that may help your hydraulics. It's a small bottle of red stuff if I remember right. I liked what it did for my unit.

Early GM's had power assist units also; different brand. They finally went with full power units. No play, fewer components to repair and maintain, and less maintenance.

the garrison unit will have some play when the engine is not running, but when there is pressure in the unit the play should be gone be sure the drag link adjustment nuts are at the proper tension as this will create undue play also I have this unit on my 77 prevo and I would not change it as the structure around the steering box will not take the strain from the full power units without major mods.

I sent an inquiry to Straight Line to ask about rebuild vs new pump. I included the pictures so I should hear back from them. I would prefer not to change the system as then I have to cut and weld etc.
