Our singing group has a "73" eagle with an 8V71 engine, we found out last week it has a cracked piston on left bank. We want to know should we pay to have this rebuilt or should we swap it out with a 6V92TA? We travel in NC,SC,VA,GA,AL, mostly mountain and foothills. We have a 740 Allison transmission, and we are wondering what out best option would be. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

I was face with the same decision last year, when my 8v71 went south. I looked into "good used" take-outs. You can certainly do that, but there are a couple things you need to consider. 1. If you buy a used engine, you really don't know what kind of condition. I called a couple outfits and they wouldn't give me any kind for guarantee. The all assured me that the engine would start, but beyond that I was on my own. 2. You'll have to pay more in labor to "re-engineer" the motor into your coach. Including figuring out a way to get rid of the extra heat generated by the 6v92. If you've got the funds to do it right, and know a good mechanic, go for it. Otherwise, you might be better off sticking with a good rebuild. Regards, Daris Bouthillier 64 PD4106 |

Wendell My 8v71 went south last year and I bought a good used one and it runs fine. Now before you get all shook up. Have a mechanic look and see what is wrong. If you just have a bad piston you are in luck because you have one of the easiest engines to change a whole hole in. You can buy the complete cyclinder for not a lot of money. If the can get the jug out you may be able to change the whole jug in the bus. Let me know where you are located and maybe I can sugest some one to do the work Mike |
