I've got an 8v-71N with N-65's and is 'A' timed. I installed a set of Jakes and they work pretty good, but my inquiring mind says-- "have I got the slave piston adjusted correctly for my 'A' timed engine?"... Da Book calls for .059 and that's how it's set. Wondering if improved performance would result from a different setting considering the 'A-timing' Phil |

I have heard of a few people that set them at .055. I do not know what timing was used on their engines. I have also heard of a few that had the their Jakes set at .063 and saw an improvement when they were re-set to .059. Jack |

Hi Jack, My thinking was that with adv. timing, the setting would 'have more clearance' to compensate for the time it takes for the piston to travel a little farther. But I thought I'd ask the group for an opinion. I might experiment with different settings to see if I can detect a change in performance. I think I'll try .063 and see. Thanks Jack. |

Phil See if Don Fairchild will answer you. He told me to change my Jakes to .057 from .059 and the injectors to 1.484 from 1.54. I now have a great running engine and it sounds so smooth. I don't have "A" timing as I run DDEC IV on a 6V92TA which has a retarded timing for emmissions. Bill |

Thanks Bill, Great advice. I've read Don's posts and hold his opinion high. Don, are you out there? Phil |

Ok, I've decided that it's not going to make a difference. I'm leaving them set at .059 and be happy :-). After lengthy research on the web, I found no references to different timing effecting the Jakes. On to bigger fish ! Ok, where'd leave my pole ? |
