Does anyone know if these old GM's (1966 4107) had any back up lights originally? I am going to put some on along with a wireless camera, but I would like to avoid having to string wires from the front to the back. I will probably just put them on a seperate switch anyway, but wondered if the circuit was already there. |

Is your coach an auto or stick?? either way, pick up 12 volts at the rear end and run thru a microswitch attached to the linkage and on to the lights.>>>Dan |

Yeah Dan its a 4 speed and so it has a reverse solenoid back on the transmission. Just wondered if there had been a back up light circuit that was taken out or covered up by the PO. It would be nice to have it hooked through the reverse circuit so I wouldn't leave it on inadvertently. |

Some had it as an option. If you get a rear camera with night vision, you won't need back up lights. Mine has it and it looks as if there is a flood light turned on when backing in the dark.I do plan to add lights for other necessary uses. If you do want to add back up lights, put them on a separate switch with an indicator light that you will see if you leave them on. They can be useful while hooking up a toad or in a campground while getting set up in the dark. They might be useful for someone following you with their high beams on by flashing them to get the hint, although many drivers are clueless and it is illegal to do, just like following close with high beams on. http://www.truck-lite.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId =10001&productId=23674&langId=-1 My two 4905's had the backup lamp option the conversion had the lamps replaced by blank alum circles. They are still on the older one. They are centered between the outer tail lamp lens, down 6 inches. They are evenly spaced up and down between the horizontal panel ribs. I included a picture of the lamp unit; it has to have a hole to clear the back of lamp. This lamp is available from many auto parts stores, as it is a common design that GM used on many commercial vehicles in the past. |

I installed a wireless camera an use it manually to watch the toad and the traffic. I wired it with a cheap togle switch that has a led in it, ran a wire to the bedroom to power the wireless. |

LOL...Yeah I thought mine was "wireless" too until I got the package home. Its just a cheapy that was on sale at "Fleet Farm" 2.5 inch color screen and 110 degree fish eye lens. I don't expect great things from it, but if it gives me some idea of whats going on behind it will be worth it. John, thanks for the info on the lights, I was thinking about tractor lights under the bumper, but those would give much better coverage. (Message edited by bigrigger on September 15, 2009) |

Under bumper lights work for lots of stuff, but you might be surprised how nice it is to have a light mounted up high too. |

'specially in "dips" or coming out of a higher drive...as in fuel stop..... Might better be "bumper" mounted, I have two fogs up front that way. Works great. My backups are switched manually; middle of the rear in line with turns and stops.Yes...backup camera mounted high...don't need "xtra light" but they come in handy as mentioned above. FWIW RCB |

John - If you still have the rear window, and you'd REALLY like to light things up when in reverse, then mount a couple of Quartz Halogen fog lamps under the lip above the glass. One fellow I know with a Buffalo built a nice little fiberglass box mounted right under the Michigan markers with two Cibie fog lamps on either side of his back-up camera - very slick, and looked "factory" rather than cobbled. And when he turned on the lights, it was almost like daylight back there! Oh, to answer your original question, back-up lights were not required until the FMVSS went into effect in 1975, prior to that they were an option. Be very, very rare to find that option on a 4107, more likely on a 4108 or 4905. Remember, the vast majority of these things were used in revenue service where backing up was usually done in a well-lit terminal facility - not in a campground at Oh Dark Thirty. FWIW & HTH. . .

Infra-Red LEDs work well with CCD back-up cameras in case you want to keep it all "stock" in appearance. Many security cameras come with a ring of IR LEDs. These can also be purchased separately. |
