Gentlemen; I have a 12kw Onan with a Perkins diesel engine and the question is::: When I fire it up the suckers smokes like a freight train and after warming up clears up and has no smoke at all and the engine was rebuilt completly and the man said that was typical of a perkins engine. How can that be? Is this normal of Perkins or what? Every thing else is OK> Gomer |

Gomer - No worries mate. That's a quote from a guy drove boats Down Under. Said Aussies and Kiwis love the little Perkins as auxiliary engines on their sail boats. Very reliable and easy on fuel but smoke like a bas... er, freight train. Nellie Wilson |

I have an older Onan DJC 12kw with Perkins, she smokes lightly at start up, then goes away quickly, 30 seconds or less. Not exactly sure on the hours, it says 1350. |

Gomer, they smoke because low compression (15 to 1) and of the piston design it does not round out till the temp goes up. The 855 Cummins and the 3208 Cat use the same design. What model do you have some of the older models don't even have head gaskets just a machine fit head to block. That idea didn't last long good luck (Message edited by luvrbus on September 23, 2009) |

Gomer, I have a perkins 4-108 in a old motor sailboat that has about 5K on the engine usually running about 1900 rpm. It has been in the boat since 1973 and has never been out of the boat. It runs fine and usually smokes for about 5 minutes and then clears up and runs clean. It will blow black smoke at 2800 rpm's. it never needs oil between changes at about 100 hours. always starts only problems are priming when losing prime in rough sea's. john |

Unless it is pretty cold, they shouldn't do that. Something is wrong. Did it get rebored or just new rings on old pistons and honed bores? Sounds like low compression. My Perkins smokes just a little for maybe two to three seconds and then runs clean. 12KW Kohler with 2500 hours. |

BTW, are you using fresh fuel, or old stuff that's been in the tank for a few years. |

Chessie; the engine was completly rebuilt with rods, mains, cam, head, by a Onan dealer and the fuel is good not too old like the tank holds 30 gal and I put 10 gal in it along with stabilizer that was already in it. I think that I just need to run it until it blows LOL No after just about 10=15 minutes it will clear up pretty good. Thanks Luverbus: Not a bad idea to do that either and I will try to get the numbers tomorrow. Thanks Gomer |

are the new rings broke in yet? how is the oil consumption (after break in) ? was it used at low power mostly lately and not run heavy since to clean the rings up ? ~ As long as it doesn't get worse (at the same pre-start-up tempature/humidity) after you get buring new fuel & your not trying woudering about a time limited possilbe warrenty concer, is there much to be concerned about? |

Here is the specs. 12.0kw, MDJC -3CR 2268T. That unit is a marine unit if I am not mistaken. Does anyone need an owners service for a 20kw ES generator? I have one that looks brand new. Gomer |

Since I don't know, do you know how many hours was on the unit before rebuild? Were injectors, injection pump replaced/rebuilt? Could be the stabilizer is causing it. You could try draining the fuel and replace with just fresh fuel without stabilizer to see what happens. As before, if it wasn't rebored or had liners replaced if it had them, and used old pistons with new rings, maybe the rings aren't seating very well to the reconditioned cylinder. |
