I topped off my fluids in VA and everything looked good. But now my blower lube shows over halfway in the sight glass (about 3/4).

Ralph P. had cautioned me not to overfill the blower gearbox, so I added just a little at a time until it showed half (took less than 1/2 quart). But now I'm worried I overfilled - don't want to risk blowing a seal or something.

Do I need to drain some out? If so, where is the drain on this gearbox?

Thanks,

Nellie Wilson

My book calls for gear lube sae 90 wt I have heard you can use 40wt motor oil as the Transmission oil instead of 50wt gear oil and 30wt motor oil in the power steering instead of the 10wt.?

Mine does that also I think its fine.

We overfilled ours several years ago. Back of the bus was a mess, fortuanately we were not towing at the time. The excess came out the vent on top of the gear box. Once the level was baack to normal, no more leaking. Jack

Many thanks fellas – relieved to know this is one of my more minor mishaps. It isn’t blowing oil (I used 85W-90) so guess I’ll let sleeping dogs lie. Someday – when I have the luxury of doing discretionary maintenance instead of putting out fires – I’d like to pull that whole blower assembly, clean and refurbish everything. I’ve seen photos of this operation (somewhere?) but have any Busnuts actually done it?

Everything works (except the shutter-stats quit closing?). The compartment just looks ugly – needs a good cleaning and the squirrel cage rotors de-rusted. Or is this where ‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ applies?

half way in the sight glass is fine, the worst that will happen is it might leak out a bad seal if the vent is pluged with dirt.

-if there is no drain plug or pipe on the bottom of the case, often one or more of the lower bolts holes will be taped right through to the crankcase. opening up one of the gasket surfaces is one way to drain, but risk damaging the gasket surface. You may be able to suck or siphon the level down, that thick oil will flow better warm than cold. Use a clear hose, in threw the fill hole and suck with (a eye on the hose, so you don't end up swallowing). Changing oil is PM, just like changing your rear end oil in the axle or the standard transmission, so it's a good thing.

-your parts manual may have a diagram to help you , look up the drain plug on the index .

~ for the archives, some of that lucas oil "snot" for gears works at patching up a big shaft seal leaks in these kind of angle drives, until you change the seal. Just kind of clogs up the seal. Seem to do ok at lubricating for the short term at least, we use to use it in street sweeper broom drives with seal leaks with no short term problems . As long as all part get lube, so consider what your putting it into first, always use snake oil with caution and common sense, don't just read the label carefully.

Hey Clint -

How can a guy so smart sound so off the nut (not here, but occasionally)? Just curious. If it's being around the dogs, you outta get out more often.

BTW, I always suck with an eye on that gol-darn ol' hose... for just the reason you suggested.

Geez!

You can clean the radiators and cage with air and its stated to do this in DA Book to keep them clean be careful not to bend and parts and leave nothing in the compartment.
Working on them is a job to pull, have to take the unit out as a whole not to heavy but unruly !
Changing the seals only at this time I did this 3 years ago only one seal was leaking but did all three did not want to redo:-)

if you filled till the oil showed 1/2 up the sight glass you did it right, the level will rise above centeras the temp. of the oil rises and may even show over the top but this is alright as when the oil cools it will return to the 1/2 way point. it is not a steam engine where the sight glass lets you add water as required .

OFF TOPOIC WARNING-
{dear Viveye : regardless of how clever a man or woman or dog be, when you been a bus nut for as long as eye (started even before puberty), well the awareness frustration just comes out in ways that seem nuty to the norm, perhaps. I don't know much about that norm stuff, just what I am able to observe. Ain't that one of the common threads here in busnut land, that getting out to do more of that observe thingy.

Perhaps you bring out something nutty in me, which could be a good thing ?!} You'll do as you will with it.

Clint -
I love deciphering your 'observe thingy' wanderings, a sort of exercise in free association code-breaking. Kinda like tackling the daily crossword puzzle... tough to nut out but fun at the same time. And always worth the doing 'cause I always learn something new.

You're making me more bus nuttier by the minute... "I've always been crazy, but it keeps me from going insane."

Wivinell~you got it bass-ackwards ; compared to me your looking saner and conversely the busnutier others get trying to following me, the saner I might seem to in comparison; in a bus nut kind of way... eyes just trying to make sure your this board will be fit to keep all your grandchildren interested enough to learn how to keep grandmoms bus alive, long after were all gone, done and junked. Never was much for living in the present anyhow, but the dogs don't mind one bit.

(actual I have a very difficult time understanding or relating to most thngs human , so I do understand girl)
