Unhired help unscrewed the top of my pressure protection valve and several bits went South. I need another complete one to replace mine, or a complete set of guts if available. This the the pressure regulator located near the air tank underneath the drivers seat. Mine is mounted on the compartment wall just ahead of the left front tire. It's hard to use any other pressure regulator since they don't deliver the volume of air needed for wipers, air horns, seat, washers, etc. Tnx...JJ

Hi JJ,

Without the Flea Market on the bulletin board anymore, the place to go to source supplies, parts and equipment is over at the WoBN's Classifieds on BNO page here:

http://www.busnut.com/classifieds

Give it a try my friend!

|@n, My apologies, for posting in the wrong place. This is the first time I've been back on in almost two years, so I was unaware of the changes. At least the username still worked! Thanks, and Cheers...JJ

John,
Do you need a pressure protection valve or a regulator. Most any truck supply will have the protection valve, probably a PP-2.

Thanks Len, new works for me. I never even thought of availability of a new one! GM Parts/Maintenance catalog calls it a Pressure Protection valve. Pressue/Volume from it control how fast wipers go, and how loud the horns are.
It's just downstream of the air tank underneath the drivers seat in my 4905. It's output feeds the air bags, drivers seat, wipers, washer, and air horns. I've changed most of that though and only the wipers and air horns (32 inch, '56 Mack truck) are left. Airbags are off a separate (110V)compressor. The bolt spacing is even still he same. Wonderful
BTW I felt heartsick for you when I saw the photos. Thanks again...JJ

John,
That's confusing. You say pressure protection valve but you are describing the function of a regulator.

The pressure protection valve is designed to prevent air from entering the auxiliary tank until the main tank is up to it's setting (usually 70-80 psi).

It's function is to prevent the main tank from going below that pressure in the event of a major leak in the auxiliary system.

I don't know about the 4905, but when I had my 4104, the air horn and air bags were supplied with full tank pressure from the aux tank. The wipers were regulated with a small regulator behind the dash. The aux tank also supplied the dash gauge which is why you would not see it start to rise until the engine was running for a while, then it would quickly jump up to 70 psi or so.

I think what you are describing is the pressure protection valve, just a little confusion as to it's function.

I can't think of any parts of the air system on these old buses that is not readily available at any truck parts house.

Len

IIRC

Most pressure protection valves have an adjustable setting (usually a knob on top of the valve) - that determines at what pressure the "protection begins" - it's usually set at about 60 psi - this means that the main tanks (wet, primary, secontdary) must get to 60 psi - BEFORE the "protection" valve opens and let the SUSPENSION (AKA AUX TANK) receive air

conversly - if the suspenion tank has a massive leak - as soon as the main tanks get down to 60 - no more air will be supplied to the suspension tank

so that you will still have braking ability

Pete

From Da Book; "The Pressure Protection Valve is located next to the front air tank and serves to prevent loss of air in the brake system when a loss occurs in one of the air operated systems- throttle, wipers, etc." The adjustment is made by turning the knob on top. Loosen locknut first, adjust to spec-65psi- and tighten locknut. It is referred to as a PR-2. GM part # 9228724. This valve is a common Bendix part. You should be able to obtain it at any heavy duty truck parts supplier.

Hello, I have a 1966 TDH 4519. I was having problems with my bags and had to backfeed the tank from the drain valve. Then I found what I thought was a pressure regulator. I removed it and tested it with my land based air compressor. It would only allow a short burst of air out of the outlet.hmmm. I removed it and just bypassed it. I think after reading this post I need to get a new one installed.
