Ok, I know I can charge one of the two 12v batteries with my 12v alt. I will not buy a 24v alt. unless it's very reasonable. The new used engine does not have the gear drive's for alt. I can set it to use 120v charger. The house and running lights are 12V. and I have a 12V alt. on the crank pully.

"I will not buy a 24v alt. unless it's very reasonable."

Reasonable is a very elastic term.

The least expensive 24V units are fairly small 40A or so.

The "best" deals seem to be a few times a year when Prestolite (in reality usually a quality Leece Neville rebranded) is in sale at the local truck supply.

135A or so can be had brand new with external regulator for under $150.

Don't know about you , but for my bus bucks that's not reasonable , its CHEAP!

I think a small 24v alt will cost less then all the equipment to isolate the batteries to charge both at the same time.
Do you not have a 24v 50DN You can charge the house going down the road with that!

Rob, when I changed to 8-71TA it did have the drive gears in it's case, and I did not want to change the case from bus engine. Did a search and found some 24V- 50 amp and 24V- 70A units, single wire alt. reasonable price(under $150.00). The present 12V can stay, cause the fuel filters were moved, so I can install a small 24V on engine block and use crank pully.

I see I would then go with the extra 24v 70a unit the more amps the faster Charge!

So your bus is now a 12v Bus?

The starter, instruments, alarm circuits, defroster fans are 24V. I rewired the headlights, dimmer switch, and changed clearance lights to LED, also redid turn signals to make them like normal cars(L/R indicators). Just took a grinder and cut the big brass buss bar, first you need to see what needs to stay 24V. Then I used a 24V. relay from the bus AC to activate the 12V. to the buss bar. Flip master switch, flip dash switch on, it powers the 24V. relay and you have 12V. Now the lights are powered from the house battery bank and work as normal. The house battery bank is charged by the 12V. alt. on the engine crank pully. As before there is room for another alt. on the crank pully.
