Rob; can you get to it with a hammer? Try hitting it HARD and then try it again. If that don't work, get a little torch and heat around the housing at the plug not the plug while appling some pressure on the plug. GOOD LUCK

Wait, wait, wait... let me catch up. "Got everything done..."? That covers a lot of ground, Rob. Like what, specifically?

Or did I miss something? Is there a previous thread I should look at? Didn't see any with subject of "4 speed transmision."

What fill plug? Mine just has a cap & fill tube. Please bring me up to speed, as I have a 4-speed too... and I'd really like to learn about whatever it is you're doing.

Thanks,

Nellie Wilson

I undid the Plug at the bottom of the transmission and drained the fluid looked to be good. then I undid the 6 nuts and took off the side cover the Filter and cleaned boy was that dirty full of sludge. put in a new filter and gaskets let it dry some and went for the fill plug on the side toward the passenger side. and no go would not turn.

Nellie where is the fill tube on yours I have not found that on mine and my DA BOOK does not show it ether.

So you see just a simple job> :-(

I will try that Gomer I did hit it with a Hammer but did not try the heat.

Bigger wrench. I have a huge one (2' long) and I have taken to using it wherever I can on the bus. (I want a bigger one) Even for little bitty bits that haven't moved in a long time. The trick is to use short jerking movements not long slow pulls, the long slow pulls will stretch and break bits (like an elastic) whereas the short jerks will get the job done. Heat as well of course, I have had good results with MAP gas, sometimes 2 at the same time leave them there for 5 mins or so. Beware MAP gas is too hot for brass, it will crumble under the heat.

Rob -

My tranny has a combination dipstick & fill tube inside the rearmost driver's side door (same door that accessed the original sewage dump).

Might be that we've got different trannys, though I've heard they were all the same - Spicer 4484s, as I recall? (But subject to correction).

Anyhoo, I'll see if I can get a good photo of that area... then I'll see if I can remember how to post it. Might be easier on the Facebook site - no re-sizing to worry about (are you a member yet? If not, you can jump on today without an invite.)
Good luck on that plug!

I keep a mallet on hand for the "short jerks" required on hardware. It's about 7 to 10 lbs, but only requires short, light taps with the mallet on a wrench. The mass produces the same shock value that the short jerks do, without stressing old muscles and tendons. The latter doesn't like short jerks. Works great. Also used in getting lug nuts off that another jerk put on too tight.

I have a 2' wrench and the 7lb hammer and did the heat (not a brass plug) lots of penetrating lubricant still no go but on lots more penetrating lubricant see what happens I'll let it sit again.

Is their a socket that would fit my air hammer (one handed) that is Square for this kind of Plug????

Nellie yes we have the same tranny the fill tube might go into one of the two side plugs?? yes I'm on facebook now TKS to you! and a picture would be great! and maybe I could retro fit one on Mine that would sure make it easy!

There are 8 point sockets that will fit on square heads. You'll need to measure the head to determine the size you need. Tapered pipe threads can be a pain....it doesn't take much to over tighten them which makes it tough on the next guy.

If it is a pipe plug, try melting some candle wax at the threads while it is hot; it should draw in as it cools and help in removal.

Some times a tap in the WRONG direction, tightning will help break free the crud.

With some care LP teflon tape (much thicker and colored yellow) could be used when you finish draining.

IF anything but nice oil comes out , you might consider installing the plug and dumping in a couple of quarts of diesel, and draining it after a sit.
Don't run it , just let the diesel dissolve and hopefully transport the gunk.

FF the oil in the tranny was good
in the filter housing on the filter and under it was old Sludge and was painted inside and out red like the engine so I think was not changed in a long long time! I did not find any Medal so I think I'm Good.
Looking inside the covers on both sides looked great gears looked good and no curd on the bottom of case!
