Henry -

Are you asking which state is the best to "domicile" as your home?

Depends on what your criteria is.

I don't know if it's out of print or not, but Trailer Life has a book available called "Selecting an RV Home Base" by Martha Weiler and the Editors of TL and MotorHome mags. ($7.95, call 1-800-825-6861) Covers all kind of residency requirements, as well as various tax rates, vehicle license and registration fees, fishing license info, etc. Might be just what you need to help make your decision.

I do know that FL, NV and SD are three popular states for RVrs to domicile in.

Henry,

Check with the Escapees, they have been doing this sort of thing for years and should know all the wrangles.

Florida and Texas seem to be the most common choice.

But in Fl at least auto insurance is very expensive , as you pay twice.
once for Your insurance & once again for "uninsured Motorist" the illegal that has no license , insurance or registration .

No auto registration , most are registered to vote & DO VOTE .

But if all you need is mail the FMCA Escapees and NATO (national asoc of trailer owners)do a great job.

I have used FMCA for a decade and am very satisfied at great (but non personalized ) service.

The biggest advantage to traveling & having a mail service id you WILL get all the magasines you subscribe to.

The USPS just "throws them out" as there not high enough class mail to warent fowarding.

I chose South Texas and love it for a lot of those reasons, but we also have the insurance problem Fred spoke of, but even worse as they can drive across the border in herds here to raise your rates, our water barrier has bridges!

When I moved, then switched from home delivery (well, sorta) to a box at Mail Boxes, Etc. after getting 3 boxes clobbered by snowplows & 1 by a drunk in a Celebrity, I got all my (many) magazines forwarded without any trouble. They took an extra couple days, but they all got there.

I've noticed the MBE address cut my junk mail conbsiderably.

So Henry, are ya gettin a Motosat? How ya going to keep on the internet with no house?

Scott Whitney just came down the other day and got my Motosat working. It went seamlessly. What a cool piece of tech... built in compass and GPS as well... not to mention Very cool having full-blown internet on the bus!! Now all I gotta finish is the computer box and wireless network so I can sit up in the mountains outside under a tree with my Mac laptop and stay tied firmly to technology. Surfing always appealed to me more than fishing!!

Cheers

Florida does not have State Tax, just sales tax and individual property tax for home/property owners. If your renting.... no prob... There is still areas where you can buy acreage very reasonable and put a small mobile home on it or live in the bus on it.

Sure is a bunch of cheap land in the Sunny State of Arizona if you keep away from the developers.

Funnily enough, my wife sells it here in Golden Valley, which is just outside of Kingman.

Peter: Kingman is one of the unfriendliest places in the US. One of the few Wal-Marts with NO RV Parking allowed, and enforced on occasion. It is the only one that has ever told me no after asking if it was really ok. I know of others that have been asked to leave by the city police. A Wal Mart that does not allow RV parking is downright un-American.

Jim,
The reason this came about is that they were too friendly in the past. So much so that some transients encamped way out across the parking lot in an old pickup CAMPER, got too drunk and one shot the other.
That was all the local KOA and other RV campgrounds needed to get the City ordinances changed. Walmart had nothing to do with it.
They do not legally allow overnighting, but you can often see RVs parked there, so you can be asked to move. Just park out in the County at one of the truckstops, the City of Kingman is not that big.

WalMart overnight parking is controlled by local ordinances and property owners. As an example, in Naples, FL, there is an ordinance against overnight parking and I was told by a friend that manages the WalMart in Arcadia, that if the Walmart in Naples does not send someone out to tell the RV that overnight parking is prohibited, the store can be fined. At the WalMart in Arcadia, FL, there are signs in the parking lot that state "Overnight Parking Prohibited". These signs were installed by the company that owns the shopping center, not WalMart. Fortuantely, this is not enforced. The new new super WalMart being built in Arcadia will be on property owned by WalMart and it is doubtful that such signs will be installed. Jack

Henry I use a mailforwarder in FL that has worked great for six years and I also run a nice little business through the forwarder and if I need something special they will do it. I also own a place in FL. It has worked great for my wife and I. Mike

On Fred's uninsured risk insurance comment: I don't carry it. I carry $50,000 PIP (Personal Injury Protection) instead of the legal minimum of $10,000. It is per passenger with my insurance company.

Some companies do not offer excess PIP. It is seldom promoted even if available. Cost is pennies. Uninsured motorist is for medical and disability etc for you and your passengers. Your liability covers your passengers for that if you are sued. Having a high PIP in Florida means an uninsured passenger does not have and incentive to sue you for medical expenses until the bill gets really high. The $10,000 minimum could be used up in less than a week and then your uninsured passenger has almost no choice but to sue you to pay their bills. PIP covers 80%.

www.taxsite.com/state.html

Listing by state of taxes you might find useful.
BTW, last tag renewal for TN vehicles were $24 each. To tag a newly bought (used) vehicle was taxed at 3%. No motor - no tag required. So no tag required for boat trailers but boats must be registered. Cargo trailers don't need to be tagged. Our pop-up didn't need to be tagged. Our bus is tagged as a motorhome at $24.00 per yr. Currently we have no income taxes, which is causing problems..State government shut down a couple of days back during the summer. They are looking into a state lottery like GA's. But must go up for a vote.

Thank you everyone!

Great response to my inquiry. The problem is that by state law, I am required/requested to notify the state DMV within 30 days of a new address.

The only problem is right now is I am bouncing around from one friends place to another and I have no permanent place to report. Thus my question.

Do these available mail drop/forwarding addresses in or out of my state of OR satisfy state law requiring having a permanent address?

If I chose a forwarding address in OR with a suite number and street address, would that be good enough? Would it satisfy state requirements?

Since I would never actually be there, but somewhere on the road or off road dry camping, will all of the other things I have such as credit cards, social security card be happy....

..with an actual non existant home address? I know we are splitting hairs here, but it is important enough to me for the question in the first place. Thanks, CROWNS FOREVER and I love this board. Henry of CJ

"Do these available mail drop/forwarding addresses in or out of my state of OR satisfy state law requiring having a permanent address?"

Yes. So does your PO Box. All my vehicles are registered with the business PO Box, CA's happy w/ that, and if someone rips off one of my vehicles, they don't have a street address to come see what other goodies they can aquire illegally.

"If I chose a forwarding address in OR with a suite number and street address, would that be good enough? Would it satisfy state requirements?"

Yes again. So, for the time being, head on over to MBE and get yourself set up, until you decide where you're going to "permantently domicile" yourself. . .

Uhh, RJ, I don't know about you, but CA requires ME to list an actual residence address with them. It's not on my license, and all my paperwork comes to my PO box, but you MUST list a real address (not a mail drop) with the state of California. (As soon as we hit the road, we will domicile elsewhere anyway.)

You know, Sean, I think you're right and I'm mistaken.

It's been awhile since I've bought/sold a vehicle (2000), and I think I remember the pink slip's having a spot for both mailing and physical addresses on them.

OOOPS, sorry Henry. . .

I think legally you can probably go with your mail forwarding by the Post Office for 6 months or a year, until it ends. How do transients who have a driver's license fit into the law. It would be discrimination against them to invalidate their license because they were homeless or their home was their car. This is not Switzerland where you have to register with population control in your new location rignt away. I would assume if you want to keep your current state of residence that you would be OK. You might need a physical address to change state of residence.

Florida has a requirement to notify of change of address for Driver's License withing either 30 or 90 days but when we renew tags they just ask if the address is still the same. I would send in the P.O. box change of address and not mention the lack of a street address.

Should be a problem for voting, not driving if things are fair.

At one time many years ago, I used General Delivery in Sacramento CA as my address for the DMV, worked just fine. And then there is Carmel CA that has no street addresses or mail delivery.

Just for your amusement

I was recently surprised by CA DMV wanting to know a physical address. Don't remember that before, but they asked for one. I gave the clerk the address where I was staying at the time. I told him it was a temporary location and I would not receive any mail there. He said, 'fine.' They just wanted some address. I asked him what about homeless people. He said they just have to use the address of a friend on whose couch they sleep from time to time etc. . . Seems weird, but they want some sort of addy. If I recall, voter reg in CA is the same.

Henry, what ever you decide on as your domicile, make sure all addresses coincide. You don't want to get in trouble by voting in one state, paying vehicle licenses in another state, paying state tax in another state etc. Pick a state that suits your needs, and change your domicile across the board. You can still get mail forwarded to whereever you are at the moment.

Scott
