Well - just opened my CC bill and found a bill for $149 from pocket mail. I bought a unit several years ago and signed up for annual service but as it turns out - never used it. Called to clear up bill and was told that there are NO refunds and they could bill because of there terms and conditions. Pulled up the terms and conditions and found they are RIGHT - you are screwed! Found a section in para 11 (a) however that says they can not bill you if yoy had no activity in past 3 months. Since i had no activity ever I called them back and they basicly thold me to get lost. Am filing complaint with CC people but wanted everyone to know about this. Has any one else had a problem with them?
thanks
Jim

Ahhh, the greed of corporate America is a wonder to behold. Had a similar deal with Skytel (WorldCom) and their Skytel Skywriter, it did not have coverage in 90% of the places I happen to be. Cancellation was no problem though; I merely stopped the auto charge to my credit card, which u can do. Recently was looking into the T-Mobile Sidekick service. Coverage is spotty thruout the States and for $334 T-Mobile would send me an activated one to see if it would work in my primary location, which they were absolutely positive it would! Turns out, my daughter is here for a visit, and hers looses coverage about 1 mi. East of where I live. Guess I saved $334, which I wasn't about to give them anyway for a "trial run".

Another one to watch out for is the site that let's you post you photos for all and sundry to admire, or helps you "repair" them. i.e. damaged, old, or for color correction. The site then legally "owns" the photo and has the right to sell, distribute, copy etc. for their profit and with no remuneration to you. What will the Deacon say when your daughter's graduation picture that was a little off tint, shows up as the frontispiece on a XXX-rated website! Did 'ja ever post a photo on an adult dating site? Same scenario! ASMP says that a full face photo published on the cover of a magazine is worth about $3500.00- think about it. Cheers...JJ

I understand your frustration, and I think they should have forgiven the debt, but to call it a scam is not fair. They have no idea that you chose not to use it, and the fact that you signed up for it and never cancelled or notified them puts some of the blame on you. If you subscribed to cable TV, but swore you never watched it, should you get your money back. I owned an RV park that accepted reservation deposits over the phone with a credit card. On many occasions people would stop the CC deposit charge, but never call us and cancel the reservation. We would often turn customers away, only to find out later that we had empty sites but someone failed to cancel. If they would at least call and explain why they didn't make it, we would credit the CC charge. I found as a businessman and a customer, that there are often two sides to the story and sometimes it's good to look at from the other persons viewpoint. Once again, I must emphasize, that I am not taking the side of "pocket mail", it just that I have seen so many "true" scams, such as the one Jayjay points out, or the Enron debacle, yo-yo used car dealers, con artists scams, ad nauseum.

I know several folks who have been using Pocketmail for years and have never had a billing or service problem. Different experiences.

jc & Jim: Both of u overlook the contractual fact that they cannot re-bill of continued service if there has been no activity; and the company is well aware of every second of activity on the service. How about if we just call it a rip-off by another greedy corporation instead of a scam. I agree w/Jim in that customers also have a responsibility of at least courtesy. Customers should call back and cancel; however, what about the business people that think they are entitled to 30 day cancellation notices and even with that feel entitled to keep the 1st night deposit or others that feel no compulsion to refund money for defective merchandise sold, like campsites with broken or unsafe utilities that they charge full price for, without even an apology.
