My kids figured out who Santa is a long time ago. What's amazing is, their mother takes them to Catholic church on a regular basis but they don't seem to know who the Baby Jesus is. Inspite of their persistant Catholic upbringing, I suspect they have little understanding of what Christmas is really all about.

In their minds, Christmas is a commercial enterprise. And, as it appears to me, it's mostly about... "ME, ME, ME". I heard my kids tell me fifteen hundred times what THEY wanted, what Santa (that bald-headed, beared bus guy hurding them through the store) was going to get them, what they were going to buy themselves with their cash gifts, and even speculation about what other people were going to give them, hoping that it would be what they wanted. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie.

I finally told them it's not a "gimmie" thing, it's a GIVING thing! Christmas is supposed to be the celebration of the birth of Christ, and about bringing gifts to the new Baby Jesus. You don't go to the Baby Jesus and say, OK...Now where's my PlayStation 2? No one did that. They humbly BROUGHT gifts and laid them down in the manger.

Of course, both of my kids thought I was nuts. Perhaps I was suffering from some form of temporary shopping delirium. But I insisted they begin thinking about the gifts they were going to give others and no more talk about what they wanted.

As an example, I suggested they think about the new paint job they were going to get the 4104 (the Salvage Yard on Wheels). Or, to think about the new genset they were going to put under the tree. I told them to stop thinking about themselves and think about the BUS! Yes, don't worry about Game Boys, think about a new sofa or a nice alarm system. It's all about GIVING, as in giving a new inverter!

I hope, this time, that when the kids go to Christmas Mass, they find out a little more about why we have Christmas in the first place. It would be refreshing if they found out it was about Jesus.

Merry Christmas, everybody!

I didn't get what I needed for my bus project, either. That being--several trash bags of crisp new $20's.

No kids here, thankfully.

Further comments withheld because I don't want to be banned.

We spent Chrismas Eve at my sister-in-laws house where they outdo everyone on gifts-- 2 carat diamond earings for her, and a new Rolex watch for him. My wife and I exhanged simple (but meaningful) gifts, and I heard her tell everyone that her Chrismas present was in the driveway (our bus conversion in progress). I liked that!
