Hi all been off for a while We made it as far as Tulsa, OK and the low oil lite/buzzer came on. The pressure guage dropped to zero. Stopped quickly did a lot of checking and found nothing but call towed service and waited till next morning and was towed into Tulsa. DD dealer said oil pump gear not running. At this time engine is out and go from there on Monday. |

Larry, As you know, my 4905 burned... However, the engine and transmission are in perfect working order. If you'd like to just pop a new engine in... Mine's available... -Mac (Message edited by 91flyer on October 23, 2009) |

Rob they told me thots were it was the keyway in the crank and would have to take the pan off to get to check it. Mac thanks, I hope it is just minamule danage. but they said it could be bad enough for a new crank. My nohow about it is very small so have to take what I get. To youall with the knowledge does this sound rite. Larry |

Sounds right so far. Hopefully the time the engine ran without oil pressure was minimal. It could have survived nicely !. Sounds like you stopped right-away ( when alerted by light )and that may have saved your engine. Let's hope so. Keep us informed, we're pulling for you ! |

Have you been doing regular oil analysis? If so, have you sent your current oil in? You may be able to determine whether or not you've eaten up the bearings. Or... If you're going into the bottom end of a high-mile engine, you might like to consider the pros and cons of replacing the bearings. |

Thanks everyone Cullen they plan to pull the pan and check the the key way. Thru all I can find out the engine was rebuilt at conversion time with rebuilt 730. I would think if have to get new crank will have new bearings also but don't know that much about DD. Do know when the engine was pulled it would still turn over. Still sounds like lot of bucks. First few hours of tomorrow should tell us something. Said they will try to seal some leaks also The radiator will get steamed also. Trying to keep from worring. Larry. |

I am wondering why all the problems? I lost a piston and rod and had an in chassis major done on my 8v71 by Luke and the never pulled the engine. Dropped the cradle braces and pan. All was right there for the eye to behold. Put in new oil pump and all rod bearings. mains were taken out and plastigauged, found no problem. Bus wes put back together and is still running good. |

Also, is the key way "timed"? If it's just an oil pump drive (and there was no damage from lack of oil), the you can have a machine shop cut a duplicate keyway on the other side of the crank. (Assuming no other damage, of course). I hope that this turns out to be less of a problem than it appears. Good luck! |

Ok I don't know much about this but, They just showed me the oil pump gear and the key had been working back and forth a long time taking the keyway out of the gear. The key way looks alrite in the crank. Will know more when the new key comes in tomoro. The mechanic said he had never seen the keyway taken out of a gear. Haven't checked bearings or pistons but will chack before putting back together. They seem to have the feeling that the keyway in the crank is in good shape. Also said engine came apart very hard, and thot engine had more miles on it than I was told. Bruce they did say if keyway bad they would cut another one directly across from this one.Larry |

Hey, Larry. I'm pulling for you that there is no internal engine damage. Sorry you've been off the road for a few days, but it sounds as if you aren't going to get hit too badly on this one. |

Well we are still in the DD parkinglot, the engine is about half put together. They are having trouble getting gaskets. There were some scored bearing which were replaced, everything that looked worn was replaced. I will know more tomoro, pan had bolts stripped and such. Do believe I won't have as many leaks. Owner thinks I should be out of here by Friday. This DD dealer (United Engines) is the best accomodating place I have ever been. Reccemend it to anyone having trouble in Tulsa, OK. Good place.
