Well, turns out I'm not going to be able to get that 4905 after all. My dad blew the transmission in his car and 'borrowed' the money without telling me...

I just found out tonight that the money I thought I had... Isn't there. So, I'm up sh*t creek without a paddle again. Grrrr....

I'll have to figure something else out, but I have an eye on a cheaper bus that may work out. I hate to have to call the guy with the 4905 and tell him what happened... He's a really nice guy.

I'll post his info and pics here after I talk to him in case someone else wants to take him up on the bus. As it sits, it's going to be at least another 3 months before I'll have the money back, and I'm not going to ask him to wait that long...

I'll keep ya'll updated.

Which? The 4905 I was trying to get? He wants $7k for it... Everything looked to be in great condition in the pics, and really nice carpentry work....

The other bus I've located... He wants $6500 but is willing to negotiate and take payments for a couple of months. The windshield needs to be replaced (someone smashed it up pretty good)... It's drivable as-is though and I can take care of that once I get the money back that was 'borrowed'... So, I'm not too concerned with it. I just need to sell the burned 4905 to make up the difference and pay off what I still owe on the old bus, and the new one. It's going to be a tough scrape, but I think (hope) I can pull it off.

The catch with the new bus is it's a European bus that was imported, so everything is special order... but, the price is right for the bus and it's nearly complete... It has some really nice equipment and nice carpentry work done to it as well... Only a few things to finish up and repair on it before I can jump in and go find a job.... So, as long as I can find employment and the bus lasts long enough... I can look at buying another shell later on and move the equipment over if something goes wrong.

He said that he was quoted a price of $3000 for the glass... but, I'm assuming that he called one of the places that insists on installing it as well... So, I'm hoping I can pick up the glass for half that... We'll see.

I don't have any specifics on the alternate bus at the moment, but will post them when I get the info. For now, I'll post one of the pics I was sent...

I'll post the info for the 4905 after I talk to him tomorrow... I'm hoping to jump in the truck and go take a look at the other bus tomorrow if we can get to the bank and pull the money before they close in the morning... Otherwise, it'll be Monday.

Not meaning to toss cold water on an already cold day.... but..
That there bus? Man, that there's one helluva bunch of glass
that's gonna' eat up your comfort.

You'd have to drive a fishbowl into the sun for a few bunch
of a lot of miles, to fully appreciate how much a lack of glass
can make for a great trip.

Hell, even sitting still, glass has no insulating value, and the
hot sun, or cold winter will make you wish you bought a 4104
instead of a Disney tour bus.

Oh, I know man... Unfortunately, this is the only other bus I could find that's nearly ready to hit the road for the price range I've now been forced into... I'll just have to do what I can to minimize those problems as best I can until I can eventually get another bus...

Honestly, it's not really my taste. I prefer the older buses... the ones with style and class. I don't like just a big white box on wheels... But it's going to be a while now before I can get what I really want... And I'm afraid if I don't buy it now, then the money will simply disappear and I'll be left with nothing... Again.

So, it's take what I can get, or get nothing at all at this point. My dad spent $3000 of what I had without telling me, anticipating a check that was supposed to come in to replace the money... The only reason he finally broke down and told me what he did was because there's a problem with the check he was supposed to get to replace the money with.

I know, I know... I'm not trying to blame him, but he didn't even ask me if he could borrow it... And he knew full well I planned to go get the 4905 today. I asked him to get the money out of the bank yesterday and when he came through the door without it, he finally told me that it was gone.

Sigh..

do you ever get a break? i like the bus above,get her and then put her up for sale at 25k while you use her. if you get a sale you can then get what you want. this morning i read your saga in all the old post's. i will agree state farm sucks! i just got a combined policy from hanover group for a 06 pilot a 09 crv and my 4106 full coverage no deductable on glass $940 remember everything can be replaced execpt your photos and your dear pets.if i could i would send you some cash,but things are real tight here as i am $1500 overdrawn at the bank as it is. good luck!

I truly feel for you and the hard luck both you and your folks have had.

But now, I am going to give you a verbal slap upside the head.

You don't need a bus to get a job. Take a Greyhound and live in a flop house if that's
what it takes. If you've got a decent pickup truck, buy a $3000.00 travel trailer and go.

At this point you honestly cannot afford a bus, any bus, even if you got it for free.

Move on man, things will get better, but the longer you are out of work, the harder it will be to find a job.

You are justifiably depressed but if you don't kick yourself in the ass and get moving, it will only get worse.

Six months of a regular paycheck will make all the difference in the world.

We love you, man. There will be other days and other buses.

Hey, Len's got a good point, Mac. Travel trailers of decent size
are bringing peanuts down here. Check out Craigslist! 30+ foot
decent trailers for under 2 grand. Use it, get $$$ and sell it when
you're done. It's cheaper driving to work and leaving the house
at the campsite.

I honestly considered a travel trailer... Unfortunately, my truck won't handle the strain of pulling one... I'd be surprised if my truck made it to California when I'm ready to hit the road...

For an "ultralight" travel trailer, the price is too great... $10k or more. The bus I can work on while I'm working locally at a crap-job and get it ready to roll... Which is my intention.

Also, for the work I do... I have to have my computers with me... No chance in hell I'm taking them to a flop house of any kind. I don't have much left, but at least I do have my computers, which are required for the line of work I'm in (telephony services)... So I have to have a place that's easily secured and not too conspicuous... Each time I've ended up moving to a new city, I always moved my computers into the house under cover of night to keep neighbors from noticing the equipment I was bringing in.

So... Getting a bus really (truly) is the only thing I can do right now. The guy I've been talking to is willing to work with me on the price and the bus is pretty nice (aside from the obvious shattered windscreen)... I'll be heading up there to look at it on Monday I believe and make arrangements with him...

The other advantage to having the bus is I can get my servers set up in the bus and not have to cart them from house to house, as I had previously done... Just button things up, start and roll to the next contract. That's what I was doing when the house and 4905 went up in smoke, and I was just about ready to get back on the road. Time is just a little shorter now to get moving.

I do what I gotta do, hopefully things won't blow up (again) and I can finally get back on track and toodle my butt down the road in the next few weeks!

Hey Mac,
I know your heart is set on a bus, but don't just throw away the idea of a "stepping stone". There are a lot of "sticks and staples" motorhomes that people are willing to part with dirt cheap because of the price of fuel. We just sold a 34' class A with everything on it ready to roll for under $5K. I see them on Craiglist all the time. We did a lot of camping and dreaming before we finally got in a bus. Anyway no matter what we are all "pulling" for ya.

I had a great one before my current coach. I loved it. It was very tough, easier to drive, narrower, and had great road clearance. They are very cheap. I bought mine for $2000, put a few into it, lived in it for 4 years and sold it for $8000... can't beat that. you can make a beautiful home out of anything. stay focused and you'll be alright.... You're not giving up, that is most of the effort in itself.

I can't tell from the pic, but is that bus a LAG or Van Hool?

If it's a LAG - RUN, don't walk away from it. I don't care HOW good the deal is, you don't want one of these. That POS didn't even survive most of their original owners in revenue service - and the majority who had them took a huge loss to get out from under a vehicle that spent most of it's life in the shop getting fixed. Brake problems, axle problems, suspension problems, electrical problems, steering gear problems, panel retention problems, the list goes on and on.

Have you not read any of Sean's posts about getting parts for his European-built Neoplan? Did you not learn anything from his saga?

Now, if it's a VanHool, that's a little different, because ABC Companies is the importer, they're still in business, and parts are available, altho often times for the older models they must be ordered from Belgium. Plus, ABC's got five or six locations nationwide for service, if needed.

But ask any operator who runs a VH, they are VERY, VERY maintenance-intensive.

Now, do a little math: If the guy want's $6500 for the bus, and it's gonna cost $3000 for the windshields (IF you can get them!), you're looking at Ten Grand. Might as well get a domestic product that has a known history rather than an European one-off that will be a PITA from the get-go.

I know of a little 4106 that's pretty complete you could pick up tomorrow for $3 - 5K, and if somebody doesn't soon, it's going for scrap. Be a much more solid coach, IMHO, than this eye-candy.

I know you're getting anxious to get back to work, but kool your jets on this coach.

SERIOUSLY

You've seemed to have concentrated your search in the Southeast - perhaps you should also look to the Southwest - there are some decent deals up & down the West Coast.

Oh, and unless you want to run a 20KW genset with five roof airs, stay away from the huge front-end glass models. Be tough to even plug into 50A campgrounds and keep it cool - not counting all the wattage consumed by your computer equipment.

I, like most of the rest of this crazy busnut community, don't want to see you get "burned" again! (pun intended, but not as humor.)

PS: I'd talk to that 4905 owner again, you may be the only "hot one" he's got, and, heading into winter, probably the only one he's going to get until spring.

PSS: I certainly hope you've had a little "discussion" with your dad about his raiding your funds w/o your knowledge. And, first thing Monday, set up a bank account w/o his name on it and transfer all your funds to the new one.

Whew, that's a lot of posts since I went to bed. lol..

Ok... School bus. No. I've had 3 of them, hated every one of them... I had more problems out of the skoolies than I did out of all my FORD vehicles combined (yes, I know, some like Ford, but... Our family is a GM family :-)

I will say, however, that I have seriously considered it. Skoolies are just impractical for my needs. No belly bays, and those that do have bays are too small to be of _any_ use.

The genny I have I *think* is an 18KW liquid cooled. It's pretty big, but doesn't go through fuel too terribly. It runs for about 5 days on a full tank (it's got its own tank) of about 60 gallons (IIRC)... And it's a tall genny...

I have also seriously considered a travel trailer, but again... same problems as a skoolie and then some... My truck simply won't handle it. I've also considered a S&S motorhome, but... I keep having the vision of what happened right in front of me on the interstate one day coming home from work... It wasn't pretty.

Here's the story... Coming home from Monroe, LA... I saw a rather nice looking S&S with a travel trailer attached to the back end.. The S&S was BIG. One of the biggest I've seen. Diesel, nice shiny stainless, the works... easily a $100k boat... The trailer was decked out and matched the paint and body styling.

An 18 wheeler passed him at a pretty good clip on the left in windy conditions... The driver of the S&S lost control and the entire rig shot off the highway, down the embankment towards the trees and rolled at least 4 times that I could count. There was nothing left... And I mean _NOTHING_. The trailer _AND_ the coach were utterly demolished. I was lucky to have been far enough back to not get caught up in the mess...

There was a trooper not far behind me that saw the wreck happen and raced by me as I slowed to avoid the debris... I kept going because I figured the last thing he needed was another schmoe getting in the way and about 20 others had already stopped in front of me.... I don't know what the body count was.

So... Having actually WATCHED this happen... I'm deathly afraid of S&S coaches... They aren't worth risking your life just by getting passed on the highway by an 18 wheeler...

RJ... It's a LAG. He's also come down considerably on his price to $4000. I had fully intended to head up there today (Sunday) to take a look at it, test drive it and run it through its paces. It's a nicely done coach with not much left to do to make it a livable coach.

And, unfortunately... the guy with the 4905 I was looking at won't budge from his price. He's not hurting for the money and refuses to take that big of a loss on the coach. He says he has around $20k invested in the coach as it sits, and judging by what's in the pictures, I wouldn't doubt it... But it's now beyond my reach. :-(

Would you mind giving me a call tomorrow to tell me about the 4106? It's not my preferred coach, it's honestly too small... but if it's livable and the price is right, then I'd consider it.

Also... I haven't been concentrating on the SE... It just happens to be where I've been finding the coaches... I've actually been watching eBay and running national Craigslist searches... Even after I found the 4905 I was doing this "just in case", which is how I found the LAG.

I've found VERY little information about LAG coaches on the internet in general... Which I took as either being a very good thing, or a VERY bad thing... Apparently, the latter.... Sigh. I guess I'll have to give him a call tomorrow and tell him it's just not going to happen, though the equipment in that coach is pretty damn nice.

And yeah... My father and I had a pretty heated discussion about the money. It wasn't pretty... But, for reasons I can't get into, banks like me as much as I like them... I've been burned too many times by banks. The last one that burned me was the last time... I burned them back. They weren't happy about having the tables turned on them.

So... I guess it's back to the search. :-( Everything I've found that's reasonably complete is at least $6500... Beyond my reach now. :'(

Uhh... I thought I did? As I said, I'm calling him today and telling him it's just not happening...

However... The more I sit here trying to find another coach... The more I keep coming back to my own 4905...

The interior is burned... It was, however, a flashfire... It's still perfectly functional... I know what's wrong with it. I know the quirks of my own coach as it sits right now... And... I now have $5000 in my pocket to either put towards another coach of unknown condition (and incomplete, at that price)... Or... Rebuild.

I have the windshields. That expense is already taken care of... We have scrap yards around here that have plenty of S&S motorhomes that I could scrounge around in for interior parts... I really only need basic and tools and a handful of power tools (some of which I now have again)...

So... What should I do? Keep looking for another coach, or rebuild? I can do the fiberglass work needed to restore the front end (headlight housings and such)... So those components really aren't a big deal. It'd be damn hard to replace those parts OEM, so I figure it'd be easier to just fabricate new parts myself...

I can order the other needed components from Luke, and any instruments I need I'm sure I can find at the scrap yard and recalibrate them myself if necessary. The mechanics of the bus are intact and functional. She starts and drives just fine. The damage is limited to the upper half of the coach and there's minimal warping of a single front panel on the roof that I can pound back into shape pretty easily.

The rest of it... No problem.

Personally, the more I think about it... The more I dwell on it... The more tempted I am to just turn back to my own coach and resurrect her.

Can anyone give me a good reason why I shouldn't do this?

There is a vocational college nearby that has a very good automotive program... I honestly hadn't thought of that. It's something I'll have to look in to...

As for income... Not sure yet. Haven't had income since last XMas... No jobs here for what I do, and I'm "overqualified" for everything here... It's really weird being turned down for a job because I have "too much" experience in a technological field... x.x

I think I can resurrect my coach back to life for pretty close to the money I have available to me... Maybe a little more, but I can deal with that later on as long as the coach is road-worthy and livable, I can deal without the "creature comforts" and just rough it... At least I'd have a coach I know inside and out, and I'll know what still needs to be done without guessing about someone elses work... Which, to me, is a pretty major factor.

I can build the interior out of pretty cheap, but good looking, materials out of the "scratch & dent" bins at the local Home Depot type stores... I can get my instruments and appliances (for the most part) out of the junk yard and worry about the better stuff I'd *LIKE* to have another time...

The biggest expense I would have would still be the glass. I have the windscreens, but I don't have the "D" windows yet... but I do have a line on them. IIRC, I can get the entire set, delivered, for about $1200 or so...

I think this would be my "best" course of action at the moment... And I wouldn't end up with a TOTAL loss on my 4905... Plus, I'd have that feel good thing going on at bringing my coach back to life... It still bugs the hell out of me that she CAN be saved, but that it just might not be worth the effort to do it in the long run...

I just hate to ditch her because she flashed over... Aside from the dash, there really wasn't much inside that was worth crying over... I'd already stripped her before the fire... The front end is where there was still wood and foam remaining that hadn't been torn out yet.

I can rebuild it. But the question is, is it really worth it? I say it is... but I don't exactly have an objective point of view right now. heh...

Well, the Bus Gods may be smiling on me today....

I've managed to locate a 1953 Flxible... It's got some surface rust and a few thru-hole spots around the wheels... But nothing too major on that front.

Interior is in good condition. Rubber is good. Air brakes and spring suspension... It's got a Buick straight-8, but needs engine work.

Overall, it's in good condition, and it's exactly what I like... Unique and hard to find. The price is right.

The drawbacks of it are space and no under-bay storage to speak of (it has no bays). But... It'd be much easier for me to handle and I can do the work myself without the expense of big heavy machinery to just turn a nut...

I went out to my poor 4905 today... She started and ran beautifully, but seems to have developed a problem with the air brake system since she's been sitting unused and unmoved... The road-side rear DD3 is leaking badly when trying to release the brakes... I know the the problem is though, the DD3 just needs to be rebuilt.

Weighing the costs... It'd take more money just to get my 4905 road worthy than is being asked for the Flx... I'm pretty sure I can get the engine running in the Flx with minimal effort... She's been stored in covered storage for the entire duration of her non-use... 16 years.

So... If you guys had the choice... Which would you choose?

HAVE THE ENGINE CHECKED BY A PRO BEFORE DOING ANYTHING....a little "paint and paper"and she might be ok? what dose the inside look like? no chance you could swap power plants i guess? is she set to be an rv? toilet? shower? jenni? go 4 it if she will run, why was she stored so long? did she die and was just put in storage? how much?

The guy put her in storage because he just didn't want to use her for fear of something happening... He knew she was rare and worthy of saving... So, he saved her from the scrap heap.

She's not livable yet... But the price is right... Nearly free. If I go up there and can't get the engine running, I'd just swap in a BB... Can't imagine it would be too difficult considering she's a gasser...

The inside looks nearly showroom quality... Interior paint is all good, dash is fully intact... She's a manual 5 speed... The price he's asking is less than the price of just the glass for my 4905...

I think I'm going to wake my bro up and get on the road and make the purchase. The only reason he's selling is he's lost access to his covered storage and doesn't want her to waste away to a pile of rust... He really wants her to go to someone who truly appreciates her and will treat her with the TLC she deserves...

So... I guess I'm saying that I've made up my mind at this point. I'll let ya'll know what happens... :-)

I think I'll avoid parking in front of the house again. heh...

Ok. After speaking with Jack and RJ... I've decided to go forward with the purchase. The rust, according to the current owner and from the pictures, is 95% surface rust and easily repaired...

This coach is the coach I originally wanted when I first started looking at getting a bus... But could never find. She's what I would call my "dream coach".

Now... before anyone ELSE (RJ already pointed this out. lol) says anything. Yes, this is a SMALL coach. I stated previously that I needed a 40 footer with a LOT of basement storage.. And that's still true. However... THIS is the only coach I'd make the exception for and work around the space problems with... Only because it's the coach of my dreams...

Gomer, believe me... I understand it's a risk. I know it looks like a lot of rust... But... As long as there's no STRUCTURAL rust that would cause a hazard to operating it... I can deal with it. We have a local automotive program in the community college that I believe I can make good use of for the body work, and even a repower if necessary (hopefully not needed)... They charge for the parts and the labor is free as part of their program...

So... As long as we can get her fired up and moving under her own power... She's a keeper. I believe my brother and I can do that within a couple of days and be on our way...

The last picture there, it looks like there's a hole in the floor... it's not. It's liquid... but it's too far forward to be from the engine... The current owner didn't notice it when he was taking the pictures so is unsure what it is or its origin... Probably just a cracked hose that needs to be replaced... Maybe power steering? Right now, I don't know and won't know until we get there...

While away, I'll be calling RJ with updates, so he'll post them when he can... The plan is to leave tonight, or in the morning and drive straight through... we should be there in about 24 hours once we hit the road.

I'm actually pretty excited about this purchase... I've kept an eye out for one of these old Flx's for a long time... Now's my chance to get the coach I've wanted for so long... I simply have to take the chance.

So... We'll see what happens and hope for the best! :-)

lol... I've been drunk 3 times I think... First time nearly killed me. Second time just wasn't any fun, and the third time reminded me why I said I'd never drink again after the first time!

Haven't had more than a buzz from alcohol since. So... Third time was the charm and the end of getting drunk for me! That was enough to last me the rest of my life...

Good luck Mac. Here is a little inspiration for you. I just got back from a busnut get together and had a chance to examine this bus. Simply beautiful. You may not know but the old Flxibles have a luggage bay in the rear (large side door in the photo.We really love our Flx especially because it is much simpler in terms of systems in most respects.

Spectacular Starliner! :-) Got any pics of the engine bay? I'd love to see the setup....

And yes, I learned about the bay from RJ today... I'm suspecting I'll be installing the generator there somehow... Not sure yet. It's a big genny, but it's water cooled... So I can at least mount the radiator for it remotely. :-)

I don't have any engine bay pics but I can tell you he retrofitted it with a modern Diesel and automatic trans. Something in the 350 HP range must be a real rocket

How much work is it to repower one of these buses from the stock Buick Straight-8 to something with more punch to it?

I'd also like to convert her to diesel, but really no clue yet where to begin or what I can realistically do...

Had a bunch of guys, years ago, that put in a 6-71 and it was too long for the bus so they extended the rear of the bus and and it was cool and don't try to catchit up or down hill. You would lose.LOL

Well, I wish him the best, but if everyone is being honest here an 50 year old flexible that hasn't run in 15 years is not where I would go to find a reliable cheap means of living and transportation. An adventure for sure and a great project, but not what I would have wanted without a job and a fat bank account.

Ok, I just got back into town and am catching up on all the posts. So now I'm going to "chime in" with my two cents - maybe three!! LOL

I fully understand Mac's spirit of enthusiasm, determination and desire to get exactly what he wants - this Flx, even if it means having to drive 1500 miles from his home in Louisiana up to South Dakota, sight-unseen to get his new baby.

I too was young - still am, when I purchased my first motorcoach two summers ago. I was 27 at the time, really had no clue to the madness to which I was getting myself involved, and no one really understood why such a crazy thing as an old tourbus was important to me - especially my family in ultra-conservative, Southern Pennsylvania! In fact they still don't get it, and see it as a waste.

For me, the maddness stems back to my art school college days when I had the dream of buying an old tourbus and using it to travel across the country - producing and selling art. Unfortunately, nothing came about while I was in school, but a year and a half ago, the oppurtunity arose for me to turn this dream into a reality.

Not knowing a damn thing about motor coaches, other than that I wanted one, and after several months of convincing the wife, we took off July 4th weekend 2008 for Pheonix, Arizona to bring home our new girl! Neither one of us knew what we were doing, but we literally flew by the seat of our pants the entire trip, learning both from the guy whom we bought the bus and through trial and error along the way.

Long story short, our two and a half week, 2000 mile plus journey in our 1961 SDM traveling from Pheonix back home to Columbus, Ohio proved to be the most fascinating, thrilling trip of all time - for both of us! We had such a great time that my wife said she wished we could have stayed out on the road for another month and a half!!!

So were we, to quote Robsedona "young dumb and full of c**" on our journey...YES!! But sometimes you just have to do something completely off the wall to achieve a greater happiness. And for that, I think we are ALL getting a vicarious thrill out of seeing Mac pursue this dream of his.

my guess , nothings wrong
he arrives yesterday , takes in the whole deal , charges batteries
adds / changes oil , checks gas , drains gas , fools w/ starter, cables etc etc turns engine over
charges batteries again
engine rumbles again
engine starts , no real power
cooling issues

checks hoses ,
repairs hoses
checks belts

charges batteries ( fixes battery clamp this time)
changes belts ( after tightning and braking belt and tensioner)
jury rigs tensioner ( will fix if engine can idle)

the $800 sounds right , but this is his third time doing this, he'll git er done. It will take longer than expected...5 days of prep etc..but he'll do it, the only thing more dangerous than a bus nut is a bus nut with experience.

Ok guys!

I have to keep this really short. I called RJ with this update, but managed to get data service on our trip back into Sioux Falls.

I have a lit to tell, and a lot left to do yet... The shirt of it. Got the engine unstuck, rebuilt the carb, got the input shaft on the tranny unstuck. She's alive and moving under her own power now!

Air brake cans are pretty much shot, but she does stop. Park brake is frozen, can't park on a hill. Rad cap is unreplaceable it seems, gotta find a way to pressurize it... Got all marker lights working... Stop lamps don't. Need to trace that down...

So far, things are really going pretty good, but now running low on funds. If I have to spend much more, we will get stranded... Not cool.

All in all though.... She's slowly coming to life. Rust isn't as bad as pics indicate, but definitely needs new steel welded in for a number of places... Shouldn't be too bad as long as she makes it back home under her own power...

Oh, engine does NOT smoke, believe it or not!

Anyone know where to get an outer exhaust manifold? This one is shattered....

Alright... My time is up for this session, time to get back to Trent, SD and get back to work!

I'll tell the whole story when I'm not typing on a cell phone, lol!

Some time ago, we had another member in trouble and strapped for cash. My business was doing well at that time, so I was one of the contributors. In theory, a loan. In practice, who knows? I've certainly never heard anything about potential future repayment, nor even an e-mail "thank you".

However, I still believe I did the right thing. With my business down, in an emergency (like someone stranded or in urgent need), I might still send somthing - but a smaller amount.

Would I do it again? Probably. I've contributed on another board for one of us in a bad, bad life-changing bus accident, and someone else who needed mobility device assistance. I would hope that most of us would do the same, as we are able.

I wish Mac all the luck and fortune with the adventure, and hope it turns out well, but in this case, I'm also with John and Barb on contributing money. For me, it doesn't meet my definition of an emergency. I'll admit, I'm a little envious - part of it sounds like a lot of fun.

I would have to agree... Donations would be nice, but this really isn't something I could possibly ask for them for... This isn't a disaster asthe fire was... I have clothes now, we have food... It's not an emergency... Save your money for someone who really is in need.

If my little adventure fails, it fails... At least I can say I went for it and don't regret it! :-)

things will work out somehow... Barring a blown engine or blown clutch, I think the bus will make it just fine...

We just picked up the last of the needed parts to get the bus on the road, now we just have to get them put on... It's pretty damn cold and snowing now... Lol! I love the snow and cold, but not when I'm working outside!

We just picked up the diaphrams for all 4 wheels, the generator belts and the compressor belt. I just hope they gave me the right belt for the comp... It has no adjustment for tension for some really weird reason... Never seen something belt driven that can't be adjusted before... Guess they didn't think it was important enough to have that little 'feature'... Heh

so... We should, hopefully, be taking my new baby out for a test run by this evening, and if everything checks out and we can get the new fuel 'tank' mounted (55 gal oil drum, believe it or not), then we should be on our way tomorrow! Yay!

All in all, I'm pretty confident we will finish this. Once the bus is back in LA, I will put her in storage, cover her up and work on her a little at a time. I knew before this started that his bus was NOT going to be something I could jump into and toodle down the road and be reliable... It's going to be a li of hard work, blood, sweat and tears... But, this one is my 'labor of love' I guess could be said...

Anyway, I'm out of time and must get back to work on her... There's a lot left to do and, as usual, never enough time or money to do it! :-)

send money if you really want to, but I have no expectations of it... As was said, this is self-inflicted... As such, failure is my problem... Save it for someone who has an emergency. All I can do at this point is hope for the best, and perhaps hope that if I do break down, that one of you is close enough to be able to help fix whatever broke! ;)

I will update again when I can... Until then, keep on rollin'! :-)

To some ,it would be unbelievable ( i had my doubts)
but then again you seem to be a man of many talents and lots of energy!

I dont even want to think about that temporary gas tank ! please secure it 2 x , please make sure it doesn't come flying up at up after you if you suddenly STOP.

Air cooled vws had no apparent adjustment for a belt - the pulley was a 2 piece set up with washers used to spread the "v"
take washers out to make it tight and vs versa

tags insurance ?
Had to ask !

Hehe... I had a fallback plan if I couldn't get her going... I'll get into that when I get back to a real computer... Got partial signal for this update... Pulled over on the side of the road so I wouldn't lose it...

Gas tank... It's going in the back end. Plent of space, and won't be in passenger compartment (per the law!) :-) I'll look at the pulley when we get back.... Makes sense.

Tags aren't necessary for out of state purchases from private sellers... Insurance will be taken care of once the drive test is complete.... Advantage to small farming communities... Lol...

Ok. Gotta get back on the road. I'll write again when I can! :-)

Short update.... Still fighting with fuel tank... Need steer tires, probably rims too. Hunting for those now... Hopefully will find tires today, not sure about fuel tank just yet.

Lots to tell, but cell phones suck to type on! Will update again when I can. Bus running great... :-)

Those Buick straight 8's are tough, built from the 1930's----early 1950's, hydronic lifters, parts available??? A mechanical 5.9 Cummins would do a super job.

Not really sure how happy she is... But she is doing well... I'm definitely pushing her tired old ponies, that's for sure.... Lol!

We are at the 823mi mark. Pulled over to take a short break. Fuel point is at the 900mi mark.... We are getting close. Nearly to Dallas I think. :-)

This thread has grown in length and has gone on a sufficient amount of time that I think a new thread is warranted, especially now that I have the bus home! :-)
