Check in any RV magasine Norcold is having a massive recall , with no operation of the unit till the cold section is replaced.

Many fridges can be got back to operation if there was no damage & no leaks by "burping ".them.

This procedure can be found in many RV books and is a specific roration of the unit , usually overnight, to help clear a blockage or bubble.

Your fellow should decide if he is a boondocker, if so the Servelle units made for homes is propane & has more insulation than the Dometic (who makes them) and best of all NO electrical circuit board to die , so they go for decades.

All depends on his camping style.

Absorbtion refrigeration, such as Servelle, Norcold, Dometic, and a couple of others, have a lot of drawbacks. Servelle is probably the best of the bunch and the others are cheaply built at best. Even a Servelle is not the unit it was 25 yrs. ago. Many models of mechanical refrig. units (running w/compressors) are showing up that consume very little electricity and run on 140-160 watts. They generally are better designed than the absorbers and will yield about 1/3 more storage space in the same cabinet space of the absorbers, and the cost is generally only 1/3 of the absorbers. A little bigger battery bank may be required but the reliability is far greater. Look for one that is manual defrost as they are the lowest in price and the most efficient. A partial of even full auto defrost model may be in order if u are a hook-up RV'er. I looked at a Korean made unit last week that sold for $299, 11.8 cu/ft, full auto defrost, 155 watts on cooling, 170 on defrost, avg. run time of 11 hrs/day cooling, 1 1/2 hrs/day defrost. 24w/25deep/61 high. GE also has a couple of models that are very comperable.

Take a look at some of the refers that off-grid people use. Some of them are LP, some DC (12 & 24 volt available.) and some are do it yourself models. Sunfrost and Novakool come to mind. Many suppliers have catalogs on line. backwoodssolar.com is one of them.

I bought my Norcold 3way in 1990 and it has never failed, never stopped working. I have had nothing but good luck with it and it will most likely end up in my bus because it has been so reliable. Hope this helps you. cd

We've had a Norcold 3 way in our other MH for 10 years. No problem.
