Hi folks! I'm changing my fuel filters from the cartridge type to to spin-ons. I'm in the process of plumbing in the fuel lines and am re-using fittings where possible, but one is damaged so I need a replacement. I'm not finding it at the local hardware store, so I need a little guidance. It's the fuel outlet elbow on the primary filter for an 8V-71. In common terms, I think it's called an "inverted flare" elbow. The part that screws into the filter housing is a 3/8" NPT. Got that part - no problem. The female side of the elbow that the fuel line screws into is what's got me stumped. Does anyone know the size this is? It appears that 1/2" is too big. Is it 7/16? Is it metric? Is there some standard fuel line size I don't know about? Another way to ask the question might be to ask what size the fitting is on the filter end of the fuel pump intake hose. I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Debo |

Debo If you go to a Napa store I'm sure they can fix you up. Truck/Bus repair shop as well. Take in the old fitting and have them match it. Bill |

I love this board. You guys are the greatest. I was able to go to a truck repair place and they were able to get it from a hydraulic shop a few cities away. Just FYI, here's what I can contribute to the knowlwdge base... - Flared fitting threads are different from pipe threads. Regular NPT pipe threads are tapered so they'll seal when tightened. Flare threads only purpose is to secure the flared faces together so they won't leak, so the threads themselves do not really contribute much to the sealing ability. What this means to me is don't expect a 1/2" NPT to screw into a 1/2" flared fitting. It won't work. - My NAPA and ACE Hardware only had these fittings in a smaller size. I'm not sure if yours will have them, but check first before you go disasembling. Thanks again for the help! |

Our NAPA has a fitting catalog that also list the larger sizes that they may not have in stock, but can get in a day or two. |
