I'm almost afraid to ask --- I've a 4106 with 730 auto xmtn. The oil in the xmtn has always been mostly clean but lately noticed it was getting black. To help find other leaks I put in a floresent dye in the engine and noticed the dye was showing up on the xmtn dip stick (you check with a UV or black light and any leaks show up brightly). About the only way I know oil can leak between the two is the flywheel oil seal -- and that is NOT going to be fun to replace... rather if that someone else will be doing that work. Any other thoughts? |

I wonder if someone didn't install the special double lip seal that is supposed to be there instead of the single one used with manual trans. I think 4106 used a dry clutch? Hey, it could be worse. What if you had an MCI, Eagle, or Prevost? Good hard concrete surface, good heavy duty trans jack, blocking, and some care, it's not too bad. Be sure to check seal surface on crankshaft. I think there is a rub ring for that. |

Jerry It has to be the flywheel oil seal. A V730 with an 8V71 must use the double lip seal. Crankshaft double lip seal - #8927749 Wear sleeve - #5197159 Bill |

I don't own a 4106, I have RTS's with v731 & V730 AA trans, what is a V730 xmtn? |

Ken, I'm guessing that "xmtn" is "Trans" = x and "mtn" = mission. |

I'm guessing along with Bruce. In the electrical field, a transformer is known as an xformer, and a transmitter as an xmitter. One other thought on the oil contamination however, is the oil cooler. If this bus has a "dual" engine-mounted oil cooler, (one path for the engine oil, and one path for the trans oil) mounted on the side of the block in the cooling water, then it may be the problem. Usually the failure is water contamination, as they rust from contact with the engine water, the oils don't attack their side of the cooler... G |

most of the GM's with a V730,1 have the trans cooler separate from engine oil cooler. |

If that's the case than it could also be the cooler core, the oil and coolant do have a chance of contamination, the core may have frozen and cracked or the soldier on the core tubes may have failed, that would be much nicer than the alternative. Speaking of coolers if Bob Baldwin is reading, hows your cooler working out? |

In my case no other chance of engine to transmission (yes -- xmtn) crossover as I have ONLY a seperate xmtn oil / air radiator mounted in front of my engine radiator. It's gonna be that seal I'm sure but I WILL NOT be replacing it (nor hopefully it gets so bad) on this snowbird trip through Florida. |

I noticed on one of the DDA part sites that they listed right and left hand seals, and also multi directional ones. |
