When a Canadian soldier dies in Afghanistan, he is repatriated by being flown to Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Ontario, Canada. Shortly after landing in Trenton, the repatriated body of our fallen soldier travels to Toronto via Highway 401 and down the Don Valley Parkway to downtown Toronto where the Ontario Coroner's Office is, for autopsy. The stretch of Highway 401 that our soldier travels has officially been named the Highway of Heroes and in response, just about every bridge overpass becomes crowded with proud Canadians and many others, to watch as the Police escorted hearse travels under those gathered. It's quite a sight. I have been lucky to attend once and I can tell you that it shakes your world when you see it up close like that. Every November 11, I will always take some special time away from my day to remember those heroes of every country who continue to lay down their lives for the freedom we enjoy. But war continues. The cost of war is commemorated in the following song written very recently, about Canada's fallen. It's about the Highway of Heroes and features several scenes from the bridges where people pay their respects as the motorcade passes. It also shows some snapshots of our heroes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWwB9NwDpq0 Lest We Forget. Here's to you, brave soldier. May God bless every one of you. Ian |

It must be wonderful to live in a country that allows you to honor your military heros in an open and unapologetic way! In the US we can't do that without some anti-war activist group complaining that we are violating there civil rights. |
