Hello, fellow busnuts,

Tom had a bad fall in the afternoon of the 6th (Monday). He broke his leg badly and will be out of commission for about 10 days to two weeks.

He will be back online soon, I'm sure.

Thanks for all of the great information and ideas we have gotten from this board.

Yours truly,
Mrs. Tom Caffrey

Tough luck being "parked" unexpectedly,
(I have a wealth of expierence on the subject)
have he or you contacted Luke to see if he might have replacement parts?
...I understand he has a lot of
"experienced" chassis parts in his boneyard. ;)

I shall refrain from suggesting he change his nickname
from Suncatcher to SunCrutcher,
as this is just a temporary setback/sitdown/DONT standup problem.
(besides...it might be in bad taste)

Don't let him milk you for sympathy,
bed pans only smell bad after a week
and by then
he will have found a way all by himself
(suggest "slideout" if he bogs down for an idea)

Buy stock in Cottage Cheese, spinich & Percocet and
YOU will soon notice that you have found newfound interests in the fartherest part of your home from him
....wear headphones!

you are both in our prayers.....

Wish you good things. How's the med service in Ketchikan? Really good, I hope.

HI, fellas.

I made it back to the land of the moving (slightly). I can tell because I managed to get back online.

As for the med service here, they airlifted me down to Seattle's Harborview to stick a hell of a big stainless rod in my leg. They claim that I will be able to do anything except get throught the airport metal detectors.

Thanks for the kind thoughts and I am doing as well as can be expected (why did Doreen look at me that way, just now?) The Docs said to look for an 80% recovery in about three months.

If it interests any of you, we just got the airlift bill for my flight down. It was over $23,500 and I am sure there is going to be some heartburn over that.

I'm glad to be back!

I thought you might get the senic view from your ambulance on the way to the horspital!
Nice to have you back and gimping around the forum again. :)
If you think the taxi ride was expensive, figure the price of that SS rod, by the lb.....
BTW I get 35 cents a lb. for SS from the scrapyard.
Was it your WOW leg or the clutch one?

Tom,
Welcome back.
Did they put the rod in the femur? If so BTDT. I had to have mine removed a couple of years later. I bent it jumping on it. That's how I got it in the first place.
I just got back to Yuma from home (Anchorage) where I had the second knee replaced.
I feel for you and wish you to know some of us KNOW what you are going through and wish you a speedy recovery.
Many thanks to whoever invented Percocet!

It was the WOW one. And yes, it was a 9/16" rod, 440 mm long, the whole length of the femur.

No one has mentioned ever having to have one of these taken out, but I've sure wondered what could happen down the road.

I have been making a point of not loading that leg until I get the OK from the doc. I'm really not looking for trouble.

I didn't find out anything about Percocet. All they gave me was morphine. And as soon as I found out that a cup of coffee would really knock down the misery, I got right off the morphine, except for sleeping.

I was sure surprised how quick they wanted me back on my feet, but that suited me fine. I was on crutches in two days, and they kicked me out in three.

So far, State Farm is treating us pretty decently, but the airlift bill is giving them fits. They handle most of our insurance, and as far as I can tell, they are pretty good about getting things paid promptly. They're way out in front of some other companies that we've had.

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

Tom,

ouch! Thats about the right size rod. I bent mine on another parachute jump and had to have it removed. They broke my hip getting it out.

3 days is about right. Mine was done in the 60s and that's what I recall. I still have the rod somewhere.

Hopefully, your leg ended up the same length as the other. Mine didn't. Caused back problems later. May finally be corrected with the new knees.

Keep exercising the quad muscles on top of the thigh and good luck,

Thanks for the info, Joe. I had an idea that taking one of these out wouldn't be any fun.

My legs ended up the same length and I regularly do the exercises that the doc wants, and many more that I was doing before I broke my leg.

So far, so good, and I intend to keep it that way.
