Even more amazing but not surprising.....the other motorist involved didn't stop. That said the bus driver may have been carrying too much speed down that grade in the rain

This was posted here at least a year ago, and several of us noted then that if the bus driver had started slowing down when the car pulled out, instead of flashing his lights, and not doing anything else until it was too late, nothing serious would have happened!

Good Grief!!!!!!!!Why would one place this, particularly in light of your observation, on the bus driver?? Since when does the on ramp have the "right of way"?

Maybe I missed something in the video?

Judge not, that you may too be judged.

Chuck,
Motor vehicle law places ultimate responsibility on the driver with THE LAST CLEAR CHANCE TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT.
Last year's post was clearer, and shows the bus driver flashing his lights at the car as soon as it starts to pull out. Unfortunately, the idiot bus driver expected the idiot car driver to rectifiy his/her mistake, and gun it on a wet road. Had the bus driver just gotten gently on the brakes, and gone a little to the left to start with, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Touche, G....

...who is to determine the "last clear chance to avoid the accident"?

I really don't recall the discussion a year ago, but I must say you are probably very correct.

...albeit, the simple fact that the driver of the auto, who was clearly "touched" by the coach, must have had a pretty guilty feeling as evidenced by the fact they did not stop after their "recovery".

Perspective is a peculiar thing, eh what?

Nice to see you "back", George. Happy thanksgiving to you and everyone!

We actually discussed this four and a half years ago:
http://www.busnut.com/bbs/messages/233/10197.html

(caution: Original video link at the top of that thread is now NSFW, and no longer goes directly to the correct video)

At that time, I hunted around until I found the details:

quote:

... the video is from a "Stalker" brand police in-car video/radar system, so this is a dash-cam shot. No word on why the officer does not move the cruiser sooner.

The accident took place March 29th, 2005 near Istanbul, Turkey. There were 18 injured and one killed.

Personally... Had I been the bus driver... I'd have plowed right into the back of the car in that situation. Better to end the life of the idiot and chance my own than to risk the lives of the passengers I'm responsible for by ditching it and letting the idiot that pulled out in front of me get away unscathed...

But yeah, the bus driver should have begun moving over long beforehand, he had plenty of time to react and simply didn't... I've seen this video before, but with a pretty lengthy description of what actually happened...

The bus driver drove carelessly, expecting the driver of the car to get out of the way first... If the bus driver survived (doubtful, I think that was his body flying through the windshield on impact)... I'm sure it was a lesson learned.

We, as private owners of these coaches, need to heed the mistakes of others and learn from them before we too experience the same fates!

Granted, my "new" coach isn't as big and heavy as the 4905 I had, it's still a big machine... I drive slower than the machine is capable of in most cases and I'm *ALWAYS* on the lookout for escape routes for just such an occasion. Sometimes, escape simply isn't possible though... In those cases, I think it's better to plow into the rear end of the idiot than to flip the bus, but that's just my personal opinion...

...perhaps the bus driver meant to hit the disintegrator beam, but hit the headlight switch by accident ?

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) -- Police say a mob in Guatemala burned to death two men and a woman suspected of killing a local bus driver.

Photos show the half-burned bodies lying in a street in the western city of Solola.

Police say the three were taken into custody for allegedly shooting to death the bus driver and wounding 2 passengers.

National Police spokesman Donald Gonzalez says about 400 residents later showed up at the police station, set fire to three patrol cars and forced the outnumbered officers to turn over the suspects.

The mob then beat the trio unconscious, doused them with gasoline and set them alight on Friday.

Mobs have attacked several suspects in Guatemala recently amid a wave of violent crime.

I was at Clark from 1970 to early 73, I was in the Mob, but I always heard it was the Pink Pony, not Red Horse. Sorry, could'nt resist, my best buddy was in Red Horse and I can still piss him off with the Pink Poney thing.
