On my V drive transit, the regulator is mounted on the inside of the coach at the rear right bottom. I also changed the big black box transistorized regulator for a digital-that is about the size of a pack of cigs. Good Luck, TomC |

Per the PD4106 maintenance manual, Voltage regulator is located in battery compartment at left side of vehicle. On some early PD4106's the regulator is located in the baggage compartment at the left side of vehicle. |

How bad is it if the regulator is in the engine compartment, right side above the transmission / air compressor? |

on my 4106 the regulator is located in the baggage compartment nearest the battery compartment. It is actually bolted to the rear wall of the battery compt.but in the luggage bay. Hope that makes sense. |

Tom. My PD4106 same as Rustytoy "on my 4106 the regulator is located in the baggage compartment nearest the battery compartment." I had a pic of it at one time. IF I can find the pic, will email to you. |

You will have to install some batteries to find out weather the V reg is bad , or just the batts died of old age or lack of service. For folks that will not be boondocking the usual 8D work fine. For boondockers the split system , start batts for the engine and REAL deep cycle (golf cart or similar) for the house is the usual. DO NOT use starts for overnight , tho lots of folks get by with only deep cycles as start batts. FF |

how do i check it to be sure it is working? With OK batteries measure the volts with the engine OFF. Should be 12.7 or so . Start the engine and the volts should rise to 13.8 to 14.4 . If thats what you see everything is fine. DO not "sand the points " most are transistor units. GET Da Book, you can NOT contemplate the maint requirements , PM and repair sequences with out it. FF |

these were the original units with points looks like they had never been changed. i found them in the passenger side electrical compartment.one seemed to kick over the starter and the other seemed to be the regulator. |

I believe you are looking for a box that looks simular to this. That will be the voltage regulator.

That looks like an old Delco. The fact that you are cooking the water out means the generator is charging. When you mix battery sizes and charge them together the smaller batterys will always get cooked before the large ones top off. Check to be certain the field wire is not shorted to ground. I think you are asking the regulator to do things it was never designed to do. If you charged the different batterys seperately, you might make it work. |

I have one identical to that on my 4104; it is a combination warning buzzer and rectifier. The rectifier is on the right under the cover and is blue. You might want to remove that cover and check it. |

To properly charde the batts the V reg must "see " them. Some folks just connect the VR to the house , as any overcharge is readily handeled by start batts. FF |

I tried using different capacity batteries together and had the same issues, cooking the smaller units. I think Freds way will take care of cooking the smaller batterys, maybe that is all you need to do. The 8D's should be happy with whats left over. I never considered that possibility, I ain't no electrician. 8D's come in Deep Cycle and that is how I found what works for me. I use all matched 8D's and they are not seperated for house use, I just tied them all togather and now I have forgotten about them except for maintence. When I boondock I throw them a couple hours a day at 60 amps from the gen set with my charger and when I'm ready to move on the alternator takes over. When I return to the yard, I check the voltage after it sits a few hours. If they are not above 12.50 I give them a day on the 60 amp charger and forget them until next time. A friend bought a nice 2/40/200 amp charger from Sears a couple weeks ago.($70 steal) I have been thinking about throwing away the handle and wheels and bolting one into my water bay and just direct wiring it for easy charging. Thats basically what I do anyway, but I use my shop charger and it needs to be in the shop. 4 or 5 8D's is a lot of power to me and having them matched takes all of the issues away in my bus. I am satisfied with this setup and have not found a flaw with it yet, but every bus is a little different. I never tried it, but I was going to put in a switch when I had mismatched battery sets to isolate each set for charging. I could drive an hour and charge the start batterys and then charge the house next. |
