MC5 guys take note.
I posted this on the other BB but had no response. Perhaps some of you mechanics can help me/us. I broke down in my MC5 & had to get hauled home on New Years Eve. The engine quit with a puff of smoke & I found the blower quit spinning by removing the easy to get at & big hex head inspection plug next to the fuel pump.

Later found the blower shaft had the splines stripped off on the driven end. I now understand this is not at all unusual to happen.

I put another shaft in and got it going. On my MC5 I had to cut out a hole in the firewall big enough to remove the long bolts on the star cover and the quill shaft. Did not want to cut any hole at all but was definately the neccessary thing to do.

So my real question here is:
Can I replace shaft & both side drive hubs w/o removing the blower. It appears I can but just not sure. There is a big rubber coupling at this area around the shaft.

Another question is; Can I remove the blower w/o removing the engine?? It appears it would come out the back.
I appreciate any help that can be shared. Thanks, Joe

Hi, Joe

You have to pull the blower to replace the inner coupling (hub), once you get it out I'm sure you'll want to replace the shim pack along with it. Just buy the whole unit-- otherwise it takes a special tool to put it together.

You can pull the blower off easily once you remove the quill shaft and the rack linkages-- the easiest way is to use a cherry picker and pluck it out. Be sure to buy a blower installation (gasket) kit to do the job. When you put the blower back on your rack will be slightly off, my advice is to have a Detroit mechanic set the rack for you, or just leave it alone (slightly off) until you can have a professional set it for you.

Howdy Geoff,

The MC5 engine compartment is tite on top. No room to lift blower up much. But I think it will come out the back?? I hope I would not have to remove the engine just to get the blower out??
I got it running now by replacing just the shaft but not too confident in how long this new shaft may last. Guess I could carry a spare quill shaft, since it is somewhat easy to replace since I had to cut that darn hole for it to clear!
Any other thoughts/ideas. Thanks, Joe
