I have the Jake brake parts to do my 04, except a valve cover and a couple of other items. Will the taller cover clear the top of bulkhead without changes? Metal or Alum cover; with or without breather?

yep!! It shouldn't be any problem Chessis. I don't have a jake on mine however I have seen them on and they are OK. They bolt on like the original cover just a little taller and they are Pot metal.

I've got Jakes on my 4104. I love them. No special mods to make room. Good luck....Cable

On my 8V71 I have 8V92 covers one peace and they are taller and work great you can get used ones all over the place :-) so I would think that 6V92 silver top covers would work Great!

Rob- the 4104 uses an inline 6-cylinder that uses one 6-cylinder valve cover-not 2 3-cylinder valve covers like the 6V-92. Good Luck, TomC

The valve cover may be hard to find you can use the spacer under your valve cover or a cover off a 12v71

good luck

my current breather is about 2 1/2 inches high with a 1 inch hose going down to bumper area. Does yours still have this type of breather or is yours different?

JWR,

I can run by the bus and close up pic tomorrow if you need to see the cover even though mine is a Flx. I managed to crop this from an existing photo of the engine compartment. I think the highest point on mine is the oil fill but I don't remember http://members.tccoa.com/timb/Detroit.jpg

I saw an 8V-71 valve cover with the Jake extension; looked to be 1 1/2 inches. That extra height should work out ok. The alum covers LOOK to be 4 inches higher. Probably because of the way they are shaped, as they aren't actually higher than a metal one with added extension. If I have any problem with breather clearance, I'll contact you. Thanks for the offer.

actually, what I was looking for was a picture of the Jake valve cover on a 4104 to see how close the top is to the bulkhead.

Hi John,

I just went out to the barn & took some pics & measurements for you. My Jake V/C is about 6" high, and is about 6" below the air filter cans. Lots of room. I'll try to post pics here later, but I can email them to you if my first plan doesn't work...

Striking out here, John. Pics to big to post here, so I tried to email them to you from your email address in your profile. Keeps kicking back as indeliverable with a bunch of warnings & crap. I have pics, send me an email from my profile & I'll get them to you. Additional pics and/or measurements are easy too if you'd like them.

Good luck...

Thanks Tim,
John's email address had changed, but all is good now. I was able to get him the pics by email. Guess I need to figure out how to make my pics size-legal for posting, eh?

Don't know if it applies to all but mine is just on off. There is a switch on the dash that arms the system and then a switch that replaces the buffer screw so when you lift the throttle and the govenor calls for no fuel it engages

Tim,
If you look under the rocker cover you might see 2 master Jake heads, each one operates 3 cylinders.
If so, you can set it up as hi-Off-Lo if you want, or even get another master and set it up as Off-Lo-Med-Hi.

Mine's just on or off. It was mostly installed when I bought the bus, but no wiring and/or switching in place (or with it, for that matter). Instead of making it "as Da book", we wired the Jakes to a double throw, "spring back to neutral" toggle switch, which we mounted to my shift column. My wrench's thought was to just hit the toggle & hold it up (or down) when I want the Jakes working. Let off and they're off. Shift lever is right there & my hand is comfy resting there besides.
Works for me, and lots less screwing around now and hopefully fewer future potential problems. I hope...

My 6v has Hi & LO and it works as Dallas describes. If you want Hi & Lo you'll need 2 master jake heads.

On another note, I didn't want to remove my buffer switch or fast idle curcuit, so I use the foot pedal switch alternative. It's a foot pedal switch that mounts to the floor next to the steering column. It uses your clutch foot to activate and it works super for me.

I don't know if a 6-71 has enough holding power to bother with a low position.

I have never felt that my high only setting was too much FWIW though I do not use it when the road is wet

A 12V71 Valve cover is perfect on a 6-71 with Jakes. BTW, the difference with Jakes is great, we travel Hwy 58 thru the Tehacipi Mtns most of the down grades are 5-51/2%, we come down at 45 to 50 w/Jakes, no problem.

A 671 in a 4104 has a lot more holding power without a Jake than you might think, but a Jake would be nice.

I've driven the Rockies and most other western mtns, including Tehachapi, more than once and Tehachapi required more braking on the west grade than most other mts.
