Hi folks, I'm in the process of replacing both Weir-type thermostats on my 80's-era 8V-71 and have a question for the mechanics out there. The thermostat housing(s) have a replaceable seal that rests against the body of the thermostat as it travels up and down. That thing is really hard to get to, and "Da Book" says to use a Detroit Diesel Tool J-8550 and Driver Handle J-7079-2 to replace it. My question is this... Is there a way that can be improvised to do this, or do I need to find one of these tools (or have a shop do it)? I'm a pretty resourceful guy and can think of a couple of ways one might pull this off, but before I go reinventing the wheel I thought I'd check with the experts. Thanks in advance for any help. I have done them on many other engines and do not remember using any special tools. Dig it out with a heal bar or something and drive the new one in with a piece of pipe or socket with the correct O.D. to push evenly and on the outside of the seal. I am not a D.D mechanic, so a genuine two-stroke guy could shoot me down if need be. |

Cool guys. Thanks. Sometimes it's just nice to hear it from someone else. I found a piece of pipe with the perfect OD to press it in evenly. That's the route I'm taking. |
