Getting prepared to finish up the NEW dash and wiring and have been advised to think about what switches I would want in the dash panel along with the gauges!

What are the most usuall switches used and what others do you happen to have?
The switches I will be using will be back-lit with an imprinted task in each one so when it's ON or OFF you can see what it's for.

Thanks
Ace

I only have a few:

Mirror mover switches for the motorized and heated rear view mirrors, solenoid switch to join both battery banks while I drive for charging, engine fan clutch override, pushbutton to operate rear backup lights as "thanks" to truckers who flash their headlights as i pass signalling that I can get back in their lane safely, and of course the eject button...

Amazingly, my old '77 Apollo came from the factory with a momentary switch that actually flashes the roof marker lights OFF as a courtesy thank-you to truckers who "flash you in" after overtaking them.

I need one of those mirror control switches for some new mirrors I bought, who sells them? Also one for the mirror heaters but the type that uses a relay that automatically disconnects after the ignition has been turned off, so that they don't get left on for days.

Peter.

Peter, I got a mirrow control switch from from auto salvage yard for $15. Takes an ohm meter & some time to figure it out, but it works. Or I could of got one from Valvec for $85.

Good Morning Ace,

Switches are such a personal thing, but I have starting at the top left side of the dash:
Tall spring loaded switch to blink the marker lights. Head light, dome lights, walk through lights(mounted along the bottom of cabinets and couch), keyed igniton switch; Second row from top: Remote start for APU,Aux.defroster fans (2),Power for propane furnace. Reverse switch (four speed manual trans).
On the right side of the dash, are the heater and defroster switches, the webasto control,cruise control switches and Jake brake.
I also have a panel of switches mounted below the drivers window that control various other functions, such as the inverter,mirror heat,electric controled solinoid for battery disconnect and power for back up camera.
Have fun, Gus Haag

Thanks you very much Gus! It helps me to plan on what and where I want to place my switches and for what purpose!

Thanks again!

Hey Gary;

I do hate to rain on your parade, but you may want to rethink the use of your BACK UP lights as a way to "thank" truckers when you pass them up in your Crown Super Coach.

Wrong color and WAY TOO bright and would ruin the truckers nite vision. How about using your dim by comparison red RUNNING lights instead? Just a safety thought. CROWNS FOREVER!!! Henry

They aren't much. I put some smaller power lamps in those cool old skoolie "stop when flashing" holders up on the roof. Still Red. They aim at the ground now. Quite ok to drivers behind (I checked).
My backup camera has good sensitivity and it's enough to back up with at night...I don't actually have any white backup lights at all, not needed. Many birds, one stone...

Gary;

Knew that had to be the case regarding your red and not white "back up lights". Good to hear that your back up camera is good enough to detect the less than perfect frequency of red light.

You know, even after all that has been done with a certain "74 10-wheeler, somehow the flashing red school bus lights still work from time to time. Wonder if they could become back up lights also. KISS.

Hey Ace:

The right answers have pretty much already been given. Toggle switches are a very individual choice---simply do what YOU want. My Crown has the usual arrangement of toggle switches.....

....that are arranged in such a fashion that they are all in one position when powered off. This allows me to simply feel the position of all the switches in total darkness with one finger. Very cool and easy. CROWNS FOREVER. Henry of CJ

Have you considered making the school bus lights into brake lights and/or turn signals? That's my plan: reverse the rear lenses (I have red and yellow lights on my 84 Ford/ThomasBuilt), and make the inner lights (red) brake lights and the outer lights (yellow) turn signals. On mine, the directionals & 4-ways do not flash the brake lights.

Johnny;

Funny you should ask that. I have talked to several Sheriff duputys and State police friends and they tell me there is no law that they are aware of that would prohibit me from converting the very very bright flashing red school bus lights into either amber or yellow warning lights or bright red rear BRAKE lights.

The only practical problem that comes up is that the converted lights would still look exactly like red school bus lights. Up here in OR, school buses flash first yellow lights, then red lights. Thus the rub. I would look just like a school bus.

My cop friends told me that in their extimation, drivers are sooosssss stupid, sooner or later, some unalert Bozo would just assume my Banana Boat converted Crown school bus motorhome would be an active duty school bus dumping off kids.

.....and when he/she saw the flashing yellow lights, would just slam on their brakes thinking I am unloading kids and perhaps cause a massive pile up, for which the lawyers would determine I was the cause. Not a good idea.

Just a little thing that could have rather big repercussions. Therefore, what I plan on doing is to remove the flashing red lights and plate over the openings. Do not want to, but the practicalities of the situation dicate it. Oh well. CROWNS FOREVER!!!

They'd have a mighty hard time with that if the bus wasn't yellow (mine will be light gray). Even harder when the red & yellow light positions are reversed.

I plan to replace the bright bulbs with something, well, dimmer (probably standard 1156's)--this is an easy job.

I do need new lenses, though--mine are painted black.

Agree totally with a different paint color. My problem is that lack of $money$ will prevent me from spending a ton on a paint scheme.

Right now the plan is to use a good quality finish PAINT BRUSH and lay on some wide accent stripes in various colors of yellow with red narrow stripes above and below the school bus yellow.....

....leaving the white roof totally alone, then painting on some upward sweeping red/orange stripes from the engine hatches admidships up to the rear roof.....

.....where the fake warp engines will be mounted. He he he. Gots to have fake warp engines. Trying to decide on early or late model configerations.

Then bribing a painter friend with beer to lay on a nice green/blue flame job from the engine hatches running above the 8 rear drivers and nearly to the rear of the coach.

Sossss....the plan to remove the big hooded black red school bus flashing light covers and bulbs and plating over the holes. Oh well. Thanks and CROWNS FOREVER!!!! Henry

Me again!!

For my paint job, I went to Sherman Williams Automotive and got two gallons of their peroxde-catylized primer. Cost me just under a hundred bucks. Comes in black, grey, beige, red. I got beige. I left the roof white like you propose, and did the rest with the primer. The SW guy says the primer will last as-is for at least 5 years, and whenever I get ready (which may be never) I can just sand it a bit and put a good finish on it. Other than it's flat and picks up dirt a bit easier than glossy paint, I kinda like the color and am totally happy with my cheepo paint job. And I get a lot of compliments, plus a lot of people ask what kind of paint I used! The two gallons convered the whole thing (sans roof) no sweat!!

Just "my way" for now....

Gary
