Got this 8v71 outta the back of my bus for some repairs, and was wondering if I should advance the timing while I can get at it. Right now I've got it set standard with those 7E60 injectors in it. Can I run with these injectors advanced for a while. What would it do to the fuel usage? Or... should I just leave it as it is. Can you really feel any differance in the power with it advanced and with those n65 or so injectors in it. come on fellas, tell me what you know. thank ya |

Hello Carolina; Years ago Detroit made a "Fire Service" version of their non-turboed 671 and 8V71 (N type) that had "A" timing, N90 injectors and routinely saw 2500 rpm rowing thru the manual trannys of the time. The six put out 262 HP at 2300 rpm and the eight vee put out 350 HP! Once the mills had spooled up to around 1500 rpm, they pulled like gangbusters and sounded sooosssss cool with big pipes and hardly any mufflers. The only problem was that if the engineer (apparatus driver) put his foot into the mill at too low of rmp, the Detroit would blow gobs and gobs of black smoke from overfueling. It was easy to avoid this. Even I had no problem. The service life of the fire engine engines was very short. This was mostly because of the nature of the service--going from essentially a cold start if the company had no calls for a couple of hours..... ....and going to full throttle going to a fire with only a few seconds of warm up time to establish oil pressure--then it was balls to the walls getting a 48,000 ladder truck up to speed. Anyway, I am blambaling. With "A" timing you could probably go to N70 injectors with excellent success IF you learned to keep your foot out of the engine until it had speeded up. Also at very high altitude, one would have to learn prudence in using too much throttle. Overfueling. Detroits respond like any other engine to restriction both in the intake and exhaust systems. A higher capacity aircleaner along with a proper low resistance muffler will also help you. Good luck and Detroits are sooosss cool! |

If you have 7E60 injectors you have a smog engine with smog cams. If you are going to change the timing to advanced I would change the cams at the same time so you can run N65's-- this would give you 304HP @ 2100 rpms. Henry gave us a very entertaining story about his old fire days but I do not recommend oversize injectors without a pyrometer-- I have seen too many Detroits seize a jug(s) from over fueling on long grades when somebody couldn't keep their foot out of it. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Well... I don't want to sieze no jugs, because thats why I had the engine apart. Ol boy was driving the bus and lost the fan drive pulley (yes it fell off, mc7)and didn't notice the temp gauge and kept going till the engine siezed. another interesting thing is when I disassembled only the right side pistons where siezed. Left side was ok. But I changed them out anyway. As far as gassing on it, I got this heavy foot, I used to do some trucking. When I get paid by the mile, I tend to trim my toenails in the fan, if you know what I mean. Old habits are hard to break. So... I will probably leave it like it is, and not worry too much about gassing on it. Unless somebody can come up with some compelling reason to change it. When I grow up I want to be a busnut. Right now I'm just a busted nut. (tougne in cheek) thank ya for you're input fellas |

ok...ok... correction to that last post. miss kitty says the only jugs I'm allowed to sieze are hers. (miss kitty being my other half)I am not allowed to sieze any jugs on the detroit. After all miss kitty is still warming up to this bus thing. So far the only input she has had is that it will need a small galley area. You see,Miss kitty don't like to cook. But you'd never know it looking at me. I hide her birthday presents in the oven at home, NO chance of her finding them in there. Hope she doesn't see that. So... I better leave them small injectors in there. Don't want to be stuck by the roadside with miss kitty after I have seized a jug on the detroit. She may go to that itty bitty galley and find a BIG frying pan to hit me over the head with. (tongue in cheek of course) |
