By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: December 5, 2009 CASPER, Wyo. (AP) -- A bus driver was killed and about 40 passengers injured Saturday morning when the bus crashed into an overturned tractor-trailer blocking Interstate 25 in central Wyoming. Wyoming Highway Patrol Sgt. Stephen Townsend said the crash involving the Arrow Stage Lines bus going from Denver to Billings, Mont., occurred about 1:40 a.m. Saturday. He said after the tractor-trailer crashed in the northbound lanes, a second tractor-trailer driver stopped and activated its hazard flashers. Townsend said about three to five minutes later, the driver of the bus apparently didn't see the overturned tractor-trailer and ran into it. The bus driver's name has not been released. Police said the bus remained upright. Nearly all 47 passengers were transported to medical facilities. Townsend said the driver of the tractor-trailer that crashed was taken to a hospital, but that person's condition is unknown. The crash was about four miles south of Casper on Interstate 25. Townsend said bus crashes aren't uncommon in the state. ''We have these every now and again,'' Townsend said. ''We have a lot of bus travel back and forth.'' Easy does it Bill, Just a group of folks with an interest in "all things bus". A lot of the guys on here are retired or current coach operators and have a vested interest in things happening with busses. Always a busnut John T |

Hey Bill..... To set the record straight... I think it said someplace that the bus driver tried to avoid the collision with the overturned tractor-trailer the best he could, by flashing his lights numerous times! Oh well, continue on. |

There was another one involving hitting an overturned tractor trailer in the dark in the last few years... Perhaps some reflective tape applied to the BOTTOM of the tractor trailer unit might help? happy coaching! buswarrior |

BW, NO, NO, please. Someone from the DOT might just see your post. Conspicuity markings under the trailer with an automatic washing system to keep it clean. It could happen. |

I get nervous & figity when I hear about these bus accidents and I still have yet to really drive our bus myself. But, all these accidents I believe will stick in my mind and hope they do to others to always, always drive these 18-20 ton vehicles as carefully as we can. Try to stay out of dangerous circumstances and just because you are driving a large vehicle don't take for granted you always have the right of way!! Use courtesy, drive slow, enjoy the scenery, allow double the normal travel time to arrive at your destination and enjoy our love for driving your coach. Most of all, protect your family, yourself, others on the road when you are and of coarse your coach. In that order or there bouts. We should all benefit from others mistakes and assure ourselves we will not let that situation happen to us, or at least always keep thinking, safety, safety, safety!! Have a Merry Christmas in your travels to Jacks Rally or where ever you are bound, lets not hear about any busnuts having an accident of any kind. See you all soon. Gary |

I have watched that bus "flashing lights/swerving/flipping" video quite a few times. Sorry, the wreck wasn't the bus driver's fault though he might have done more to avoid. We weren't there and the camera angle isn't the best for second guessing but for certain, the accident IS the fault of the idiot car driver that did not stop at the intersection of side street and main road, but drove out DIRECTLY in front of a bus then drove at a crawl, giving the bus no option but to swerve around. We also need to remember that flashing the headlights is how you honk the horn in Europe, unlike here. And though it appears that he might have been tapped by the bus the car did not stop. Even if he wasn't hit, he should have stopped. You know, his moves suggest he was impaired either chemically, or mentally and should not have been driving. |

I think all of us hate to read of any bus accident, especially one that involves any fatalities. However, regardless whose was at fault, if one person on here picks up a little information from that accident that prevents a future accident, it is worth posting these reports. Jack |

The "learning experience" is valuable only to those that understand that when you drive any vehicle, "right of way" doesn't matter prior to a collision. Driving a heavy vehicle is a full-time operation; eyes should be looking as far ahead as they can see, and the vehicle should never be driven faster than the safe distance that those eyes can see. In that first accident, the bus driver should have assumed he may have to bring his bus to a halt as soon as he saw the car pulling out. The service station at the bottom of the hill should have caused him to lower his speed as he was descending as soon as he saw that condition. Anyone could have entered that intersection at any time.. In the second accident, the driver was at fault for driving faster than conditions permitted. A 70 mph limit isn't mandatory in Florida's rt 95, but regardless of rain or fog, motorists including buses and trucks, do that speed, or exceed it. Consequently, Rt 95 in Brevard county Florida has the highest rate of fatalities for all of Rt 95.. It doesn't matter "who has the right of way", it only matters how you avoid an accident. People do foolish, unpredictable things, and looking ahead; being aware of the nuances of "casual driving" can help prevent you from an accident. A degree in motor vehicle law isn't going to prevent you from having an accident; good common sense, and being alert, will. (and NO, I don't think I'm better than anyone else) |

Yeah, the bus driver had plenty of time. He or she should of rammed the sucker or took it easy to the left and passed him. I prefer the first. Just kiddin. |
