When checking the water level in the exp. tank on
a mci. when you open the valve on the tank should
the water be cold or at running temp. thanks.

MCI or Ford Pinto, if the thermostat(s) are working and the engine has been running for more than about ten minutes, it should be hot. There should also be pressure on the expansion tank, unless the seal is bad, or you have a leak somewhere. Cheers...JJ

On my MC-8 you checked level at the level warning light unit by the rear start switch. If this system wasn't installed on your bus, there should be a sight glass in the header tank to see the level. I doubt you will see much by looking down the filler neck, it's too far away from the tank.

Can someone tell me if the water should be HOT or
COLD when checking the level in the exp. tank.
Thank you. Matt.

If the engine is cold, the water in the expansion tank will be cold. If the engine has been up to operating temperature for some time, then it will be warm or hot.
I wonder what difference it makes?

On the MCI 9's we have, the expansion tank has a round glass "window" which shows the water level in the expansion tank. Half way up the site glass is a line for "Full Cold".

Cold is when it should be checked, prior to a trip. When it's Hot, the level should be above the level mark anyway. Same as the level mark on a car expansion tank. Just keep it above the mark.
Peter.
