For a couple of years, I have been "plagued" with one of the two breakers on our Onan NHH 6500 popping... from time to time.

I have checked the draw on both legs going into the main panel; (in fact even switched them a couple of times) and find nothing of any real significance that would make it happen. Always the same breaker.(bad breaker?...how would one check that?)

Switched the loads around several times, but, alas, seems to make no difference! :-) :-(

Mystified...any suggestions? (thought I had all the answers...:-) :-) :-) )

Thanx!

If there is a bad connection at the breaker, it will develop heat and trip below it's rating. If it's warm right after it trips, I would change it.

A breaker can be weak, even new sometimes. Change it out, not much cost, and forget about it!

The contacts are probably arched so bad it's causing it to trip.

There is no way to check one without damaging the case.

RC,

Since you have already amp clamped them and they are almost the same, Shoot them with an infrared temp detector and see if any difference.

I would suspect you will find the one tripping to be hotter under the same load, .

Either way you going to have to replace it, just nice to know why, or maybe just a weak breaker. I have replaced plenty of them at work. :-)

Strange as it sounds, if the clamping screw to the output wire is not as tight as can be, it will create extra resistance and cause the breaker to trip. You should check all breakers to make sure the screw on the output wire is tight since the bus is vibrating going down the road. Good Luck, TomC

Today I removed both breakers....filthy and most probably corrosion is the culprit. The leads are typical terminal ends and are not affixed with a screw-in connection.

Think I'll do as suggested and just replace both breakers. (also note both were Made in Mexico...have no idea how long ago)

Should have done this a couple of years ago...but nooooo. I had to start from the "other end"...:-):-)

Many thanx for the advice....and suggestions.
What a great board!!!:-) (thanx,Ian!)

PPL...in Houston, has the Onan breakers I need....and many more, from what I am told.

A post above indicates "not much cost"....doubtful, at least in my definition....these are $35++ shipped...after a healthy discount. Understand "newer models" are in the $50 range...before shipping. Typical Onan!!

Thanx for the "help". Will post results after I receive the new breaker.
