Does anyone know of a way to hook up a remote heat hookup threw the existing coolant system in the back of the coach.
I have found a soarce for the heaters in the back of vans, the hook up is a loop that will be fed back into the factory coolant system. Since the factory heat has never worked..this might take the edge off the front and back temps and be easier and smaller to fit in tight places

Thanks

are you talking about a heating unit that you hook up at home??? and disconnect when leaving??? I once played with this type of system, It would need valves on the in/out bus system, the in/out of the stationary heat system and quick connects to connect the flex lines.
- If you are thinking of something else, then excuse my intervention. cd

Cory..
you know the heaters under the seats of conversion vans..in the back to hear the very back of the van? those are the ones im talking about. they hook up directly to the coolant system, in a loop and feed right back where they came from. they have a small heater core in them and a small 12v fan. I found a place in the front of my 4501 that was the factory hookup for the defroster to the upper deck windows that might work..gotta pull DA BOOK out and see where it runs.
Fred..got any ideas?

The rooms in my bus are small enough that 1 unit per room will make it toasty and at 25.00 per used unit..what does it matter..I just dont want to cut the circulation of coolant to the 871 and mess up the factory loop

Pete, I've been looking for units like you describe and the price you mentioned sure sounds good. Will you share your source? Thanks

Dale
I got them at the local U-PULLIT a junk yard..the ones i got were almost new..just look under the back seats of newer conversion vans. My place is pretty cheap..but i cant see that someone else could charge a whole lot more

If you look in the scrap yard for the "box heater" frequently installed in Skoolies to keep the urchins warm , you can find many with a 60,000 to 80,000 btu output.

Bluebird used 2 of them (plus dash heat) in early Wanderlodges and they are increadble in the cold.

Most coaches ( unmodified ) will need about 30,000 btu , so 160,000 is really fast to get LOTS of heat.

Fred,

Thats a great idea..I was lookin at smaller ones cause those were the ones I saw..I'll hit a few bus yards. 3 rooms on the bus( Scenicruiser ) Are there lines I can tap into safely without cutting off the circ of the factory system? I"m looking in my book but its not quite clear where I can pick up a loop

Thanks
( I knew youd go south..lol )

IF you just use the Factory system (that usually has a fine circ pump built in ) there should be no problem.

Beware that the factory circ pump is usually 1 or 1 1/4 so to assure great heat you will need hose or copper tubing of the same inside diameter.

We set the unit up so the "old " drivers defrost switch operates as stock, but re wired the Air Cond knob so the blowers for the driver can come on Without the circ pump , so it doesn't run in summer.

Also used one extra set of contacts so the pump can run Without the blowers.

This is so we can run the "box" heaters after the engine shut down.
Lets us stay warm in coolish weather for a hour or two just from circing the water from the hot DD.Our box heater (40,000btu 3 speed marine unit) is cut into the wall on the inside where the fresh air feed to the air cond penlum was.

Works for me ,
BUT be sure to leave a schematic for future trouble shooting.
