Mike, I used fiberglass duct. you can cut it and square it as needed..it worked pretty good. clearence is about 3 or 4 inched cause the one side is aluminum and can take heat. I am also closing mine totally in and using a 12v fan from a small forign car ( which are waterproof ) to vent the enclosed compartment. If you want one..get it at a local u pull it..10 bucks is a deal Pete | ||

Check out Dick Wright (at Wrico?) in Oregon (web search) he carrries a foam panel with a flexible lead plate imbedded in the foam. It's expensive but you asked what was the best. | ||

I used Soundown (only one 'D') for my genset box. It is a quilted fiberglass product with a lead sheet in the middle and an oil and fuel resistant layer on the outside. http://www.soundown.com/ Scott | ||

Does the lead interior of the Sounddown stuff require any special handling or application considerations because of the lead interior? Reason I ask is that I need to quiet down the floor hatches on my Crown ex-schoolie, applying the product to the underside of the hatches. Do not know if the lead would/might/could cause health problems later after many heat/duty cycles. Thanks in advance. Henry | ||

The lead sheet is not exposed except where you cut the material. And even then, only a thin edge is exposed. Then you use a special tape to seal the cut edge. So the pieces get installed like little custom panels. I am no chemist/metallurgist but I don't see how it would be harmful. Scott | ||

Everything I know about lead usage, and health is as follows: 1) lead does not penetrate the skin barrier; handling lead with bare hands will NOT increase your blood lead levels. 2) handling food with unwashed hands that have been handling lead WILL increase your blood lead levels. 3) smoking cigarettes with unwashed hands that have been handling lead WILL increase your blood lead levels. (If you smoke, I see no reason why you should worry yourself about lead poisoning. Your denial system should easily allow you to ignore this life threatening hazard too.) 4) the vapor pressure of room temperature lead is unmeasureable. If you want a superior lead free sound deadening material, try: http://www.wilrep.com/panel1.html They make a sound deadening material using barium sulfate (the stuff of barium enema's and "milkshakes"). It's heavy, cheap, and does a much better job than lead sheeting. And best of all, it's nontoxic. -Chuck | ||

FYI....I checked the price of lead sheeting today and compared it with cork...both 1/8th inch thick. It will take roughly 5 times the price of cork to do it with lead sheeting. Cork about $300.....lead approximately $1600. No brainer for me, but thanx FF for the thought provoking information. That is exactly what makes this board crem d'crem. (sp? ) RCB | ||
