This past New Years day, we fired up the '06 and headed 430 miles up the road to Danville, IL, where my son lives. My bus is a work in progress but we have used it almost since day one. There is a lot of bare plywood, and a lot of "proof of concept" stuff remaining in my bus. The weather was cold this trip. The front defroster groaned at startup but like always, quieted down after it warmed up a bit. I still have the bus heat but nothing is automatic, off or on, high fan or low fan...but we are comfortable. I have one propane furnace and a Mr Heat camping heater (not the big one, though). Also, we have two cube heaters. I love driving down the road, air assist OFF (unless I am fighting wind or driving in a neighborhood), elbows on the armrests, Old Time Radio on the Sirius radio, wondering what the poor people were doing. When we got to my sons house, we plugged into a 20a extension cord, and I also plugged in the block heater. We ate steaks that I cooked on the grille, and then played Sequence. I hit the hay and we were snug and warm with the furnace set at 62 degrees. At 6:30a, I noticed the furnace was just not shutting off. Well, it was 2 below zero outside. I put another bottle in the Mr Heater, fired it up, cranked up the furnace and warmed up the place. We were going to leave early (this was to be a short visit). After eating breakfast and walking the dog....I sat in the drivers seat, crossed my fingers, and hit the starter.....she started instantly, like always, but you could tell she was damned cold. It took almost 20 minutes to get her water temps moving off the peg, and aired up. The compressor just did not want to get her up. All of my "mechanicals" are only about 4 years and 22,000 miles since complete rebuild. Finally, air assist on, I put her in reverse, let out the clutch, and backed out. I had to get out and raise my ham antenna, did a walk around, and headed down the street. 430 miles later, back in Lower MO. The bus eventually warmed up, all was good. Live IS good when you are a busnut and everything works out. |

Hi Larry, The message above yours on the board is about a beautiful Flx in pristine condition owned by Dave & Carol Lang. Yet, I'll bet they'd be thrilled to see your bus "in the works". Make no mistake, they, and all of us, know exactly where you are now. Thanks for the great story. Ian www.busnut.com |
