Well The Bus Addiction Countinues At An Alarming Rate. I Need Say No More.....LOL

I Just Bought Myself A 1954 PD-4104 6-71 4 Speed. This Now Makes 7.(Buses) With More To Come. HeHe..

I Have A Question And Am Hoping Someone Can Answer It For Me.... As Always I Would Like To Dig Up Some History On My New Old GMC Girl.
The Vin# Is.. 1400

I Can Read CALIFORNIA SITESEEING TOURS Standing At The Right Angle Across The Front Of The Coach.

I Drove The Coach Home Today.(100 miles) The Thottle Likes To Stick On The Floor. WOW What A Ride That Was In Rush Hour Traffic. I Fixed The Problem By Running A Bungie Cord Around My Boot And The Pedal. Worked Great Until I Had To Hit The Brakes..LOL. But, I Got-Er-Done.

I Am Leaving Tomorrow To Head Out West (Long Beach Ca)To Pick Up My 1976 Crown(Monster Coach) And Then To Lake Havasu Az To Grab My 60 Series Crown And Then Onto The RALLY At QUARTZITE.....

I Hope To Meet Many New Friends All With This Same Crazy Sickness Known As The BUS NUT SYNDROME

10-4...10-4
Any Help On History Of The 4104 Will Be Greatly Welcome.

Thanks JOHN

I'm not sure if "nut" can accurately describe your condition!

Good luck and have fun with all that iron.

My 4104 is s/n 1274, just a bit older than yours.

RJ will know the history. I tried my old link to GMC bus deliveries but it has closed down??

RJ,

Please post the new link if you have one.

Hope this helps,

John -

PD4104-1400 was delivered new in May of 1955 as fleet number 186 to New Mexico Transportation Company, based out of Rosewell, NM.

JLV (Roadrunner Tex) will clarify my belief that NMT is/was a Greyhound affiliate.

As a guess the accelerator cable on an 04 is similar to the 06.

On the 06 the cable runs thru 1/4 inch brass pipe and is easily replaceable.

Get Da Book , pull the cable and soak it in diesel lube the cable with Da Book's recomendation , although I chose teflon grease instead.

IF this doesn't cure it you will have to look, its probably a break in the cable housing , again call Luke at US Coach for the parts .

My 4104 had a sticking throttle cable.
I pulled back the rubber boot (what was left of it) back by the engine and sprayed PB Blaster down the casing.
Let it soak in and worked the throttle cable in/out, then sprayed more.
I used my air compressor to blow/force the PB Blaster further in. I repeated this spray-force-work the throttle until the cable was moving freely.

That solved the sticking problem, then about 3 months later the cable broke at the back of the bus just where it turns up from under the bus to go to the engine. the cable had rusted inside the casing which caused the binding first then it finally broke after I cleaned it.

I removed the cable from the compartment under the drivers seat and just pulled it out. I then removed the other end of the cable from the engine bay. The cable was very rusty where it had broke.
To clean the casing I sprayed lots of PB Blaster in through the engine end of the casing. Then I used a part of the cable I pulled out chucked into a drill as a snake to clean the casing. Over and over I would spray PB Blaster and drill/snake until I thought it was clean. Then I flushed the casing out with compressed air and mineral spirits.
I replaced the cable with new 3/16 cable from Home Depot. First using a grease gun to pump grease into the casing and then greasing the cable the full length as I pushed it into the casing.
I reattached the ends and replaced the HEAVY spring someone had put on with a lighter spring.

The throttle has been working great for 2 years so far and the lighter spring makes driving a lot more enjoyable...

MrBreeze; I have a 57 4104 and I found the excellerator pedal was sticking at the pedal. I took the grease fittong out and soaked it with PB Blaster, let it sit a while and put in a new grease fitting,No more problem. That area gets a lot of dirt from your shoes and such. That is the first thing I would check and then go for the cable.

New Mexico Transportation Company home office was located in Roswell,NM.
The old ex New Mexico Transportation Company bus station on North Main is still in operation to this date.
Note:That New Mexico Transportation Company was in part owned by the Greyhound Corp.
New Mexico Transportation Company is no longer it was bought by TNM&O Coaches in Lubbock,Texas many years ago.
Now TNM&O is no longer as it was bought by the now Greyhound Lines.
New Mexico Transportation Company had some very good equipment in later years it was GMC and MCI equipment.
Many years ago when I was stationed in Roswell,NM at Walker AFB (SAC) and got to ride on a New Mexico Transportation Company PD-4106 from Amarillo,Texas to Roswell,NM and that old 4106 was a very fast bus back then we made the trip in record time.
New Mexico Transportation Company is long gone but the memories still linger on.
Take care of the old PD-4104 paint her the old Greyhound Blue and white and it will look like a New Mexico Transportation coach again.

Thanks Guys & Gals,Its Great To Here All That Great History. Wow A Greyhound Bus.... Well I Got A Couple Trailways Already So Why Not A Hound To Go Along With The Herd.

This Bus Came With Both Of The Books.(Maint. & Parts)

As Far As The Throttle Cable ..... Thanks For The Info.My Superior Coach's Throttle Did The Same Thing.I Used Air To Get Lube Up In There.. I Will Soak This One Soon. As Of Now I Just Havent Had Time. I Just Got Her Home Last Night As The Sun Was Going Down. This Bus Has Sat In A Field For Some Years. ( Fired Right Up.. And Purrs )
I Looked Her Over Very Good Before I Handed Over The GREEN BACKS. I Bet I Spent 4-5 Hours Looking At Everything. The Bus Is VERY Solid !! The Only Rust I Could Find Was A Small Spot At The Front Of Each Corner.Next To And By The Lower Fog Lights.& THATS IT !! Well I Guess There Is A Little On The Engine Cover Braces. But Over All This Is A Very Solid Old Girl.

And As Far As Parts Go... Well.. YES. What Do You Have In Body Parts And Other Stuff Doug??. Also The Bus Is Gutted (Yea Sad) I Would Like To Find The Chrome Rail That Runs Around The Driver Seat. Im Not Sure Yet What All Is Missing Inside. But Not Much. The Seats Are Long Gone. Thats For Sure.

Nellie You Have A 4104 Right?

Thanks Guys....

I Just Went Outside And Looked The Bus Over Somemore. I Can Plainly See The Numbers 186 Below The Window On The Entrance Door.. !!!

VERY COOL. YES, I Will Have To Paint Her Back To The Original Colors As A Greyhound.

All I Need Now Is Some Original Seats And Stuff For The Inside Like That.

Someone Had Converted The Bus Many Years Ago.I Was Told That The Bus Was In Alaska For Many Years. The PO Gutted The Bus In Order To Re-Do It. Im Glad He Lost Interest. Heck,I Already Have A Converted Bus. I Dont Need Another. But, Seated Coaches Are COOL, Original And Apart Of Our History.

Thanks Everyone.
You Cant Tell Im Excited Can You..???

Our source of information for GMC intercity Coaches.
RJ Long and my self have the same list for the GMC intercity coaches.
The list dates back to the old PD-3751 Silversides and goes through to the last GMC Intercity Coach that was built H8H649.
The list has each GMC coach type and serial number and the date it was built and the 1st bus company that bought it when it was new from GMC.
I do not have any information on the MCI coaches sorry.
Some Eagle owners have a serial number list for the Eagle model production.

RJ,

Thanks. That list used to be on a website called something World but the site is closed down. I thought you had a new website.

I should have copied that list when I had a chance!!

However, since I probably will keep my 4104 the rest of my life I probably won't need it anymore. I got all I could find about mine.
